A drug could have felt like God's gift to mankind 2 years ago, but if its not working now then thats all that matters.

Good post. The way I look at life is some periods of remission are better than none.I for one don't beat myself up with "would I have been better had I never started drugs". My problems are so hard wired and started so young in life that talk therapy wasn't going to put a dent in my emotional life.So I've cycled drugs for almost 40 years and that's a fact of life. Had it not been for benzos I would never have had a fairly productive work life. I suffer from social/phobia/panic anxiety. CBT just didn't cut it and talk therapy and helped me understand it but didn't stop it.
Oh yes and I was always very physically active and took all the latest cure all supplements and vitamins and minerals and that didn't cure me.

It much more complicated than that. "Poop out" comes in many different forms. There are:

1. Drugs that stop working, but you can use other similar drugs.

2. Drugs that stop working, but you can use other more exotic drugs.

3. Drugs that stop working, and seem to have changed your brain so you can't use any other drugs, because either they don't work or because of the side effects.

Obviously, No. 3 is the worst. Additionally, what if you fall into No. 3 and you can't go off all the drugs because you do not snap back to your pre-drug state? In other words, lets say on a scale of 1 through 10 your brain naturally produced serotonin at a 5, but then after the drugs, it produces sertonin at a 3. Then you can't be on the drugs because they don't work or because of the side effects but you can't be off the drugs because of the way the drugs changed you.

What's a remission? Haven't felt normal in over 13 years and have tried many drugs anc categories. Some side effects were so awful had to stop and the one with no side effects luvox now can't get off the 50mg tiny dose but it doesn't do anything my brain wants it after all these years and benzos were wondere drugs at very low doses for me till about four years ago. I just try and push on and it's getting harder. Many poo poo my thyroid but seriously that's when everything went down hill. Love Phillipa

I'm not condeming medications, I just think that people need to let go of meds that once worked but are clearly no longer working.

I took celexa once and it worked great, the next time I took it, it did nothing. Its not going to help if I take it for another two years and complain the whole time about why I can't feel like I did when I first took it.

I say move on.

I guess I a just concerned that some people are unable to accept when a drug is no longer working (it happens to me too).

Sure it sucks when a med works and you feel great and then it stops, but I don't think its reasonable to keep taking a drug that has not been working for a long time and expect it to start magically working.

Very insightful post. I'm in category 3 unfortunately. Actually it's sort of a modified cat 3. The drugs that used to "work" on maybe a 7 out of 10 scale are now at a 1 or 2. However, and this is important, they are not a zero. Then if I try to come off of them, all hell breaks loose and my condition deteriorates into an eventual life threatening situation.

To say the least, my body stop bouncing back to pre-drug states many years ago, but that might be irrelevant since my pre-drug state was unacceptable.

Exactly. Me too, but with Celexa instead of Luvox.

And instead (eventually) tried memantine, which prevents it from doing so for me. The combination has been better than anything else I have tried, for 13 weeks now.

I'm at a pretty low level. I've been diabled from my job for a few years ago. My mornings are always pretty bad, and sometimes the rest of the day isn't so good either. A lot of fatigue and apathy, along with mostly physical manifestations of anxiety.

Interesting. I just procured some Parnate. I took Parnate for several years and it pooped out completely about 14 years ago. My old pdoc used to have me try it every few years. It's been about 4 years now so I thought I'd try it again.

Think it's a waste of time and hope and money? I try other things, they just have not worked so I try it again evey few years. Has anyone heard of a drug working again after years? I used to go on drug holidays from Parnate for several months at a time and that worked for a few years.
