Nardil - 75mg- when is it supposed to work?

Posted by Mickapoo on October 13, 2008, at 21:06:40

I started Nardil at 45 mg/day and now I am up to 75 mg/day. I've been at 75 mg/day for 6 weeks now. I have not noticed any difference in my depressive mood or social phobia whatsoever. When should I start to notice some sort of effect? Should I contact my doctor? I don't have insurance but if this seems really out of the ordinary I'll spend the money to go.

nardil worked very strangly for me in regards to dose.
First time i was on it i took 30mg for 3 weeks then went to 45mg and it kicked in right away.. but the hypotension was too bad.

Second time i was on 30mg for 8 weeks and nothing.. went to 45 mg and it worked after a couple days.

Third time i started on 90mg and was on it for 8 weeks and nothing at all except for dreadful constipation.

So for me it only seems to work if i stay on 30mg for a while then go to 45mg.

Were you taking it for social phobia? Did the low dose help for that?

yeah social phobia and depression.. it didn't help until it kicked in except for the first week r so.. when i started on the 90mg i felt drunk for a week. When the med kicks in properly you know about it..u will very suddenly feel very different and possibly have all new side effects.

Hi Mickapoo,
Are you taking Nardil just for social phobia with no atypical depression? Not to play down social phobia, it can be debilitating, and is probably under treated, but Nardil is the BOMB. High dosage clonazepam or low dose Nardil augmented with low dose clonazepam may work better for social phobia.
Just my opinion,
Jedi

Actually that's a point i forgot.. when i was on nardil i started clonazepam as the nardil was helping me with social interaction but not helping me with anxiety, especially anxiety when i knew something was coming up ect.

I do have mild depression with what my previous doctor called "major mood disorder", but what is most debilitating to me and has caused me to go on an MAOI is the social phobia. The Nardil has not helped one bit for that. I have tried Clonozepam, that didn't help, made me feel physically less stressed, really relaxed me PHYSICALLY, but it did nothing for my emotional fear. I still could not overcome it.

I just don't know what to do, I'm at my wits end. I'm tired of being afraid all the time, daring not to venture outside my house during the day and running inside or ducking behind my car if a neighbor is outside (it's that ridiculous). I don't know if I should stay on the 75 mg or go down, or what... I don't have insurance, and I can go see my doctor, but have to pay out of pocket Can't afford to see the psych I was seeing, so now can only go to my family doctor, which is who gave me the Nardil after trying practically every other med on the planet.

Hi again,
This is another one of those things where everyone is different. I had social anxiety since my teenage years, and the combo of Nardil and clonazepam really just knocked it out. Is your depression atypical? Oversleeping, overeating, rejection sensitivity, mood reactivity. The MAOIs are about the best for this type of depression. Some people also take longer than others to show improvement on the MAOIs. I would sure give it a few more weeks before giving up on the Nardil. Both Nardil and clonazepam affect GABA. I believe this is why they act synergistically to help social anxiety. I've heard of people using beta blockers before a situation like a speech, or other anxiety producing social situation. But your social phobia sounds more generalized than this. Sorry, not a lot of help here.
Take care,
Jedi
