Nardil hypertensive episode - chocolate

Posted by Mickapoo on September 24, 2008, at 6:29:07

I was just reading about how chocolate is ok to have if you are on an MAOI. Well I just wanted to write this post and tell everyone that last night I had a hypertensive episode (not a full blown crisis) from eating chocolate. I had 2 quaker choc chip bars- they are coated in chocolate and then there are choc chips inside. This was the only thing I had to eat, and being that choc has been on the list of foods to avoid, I knew it was the culprit. I was dripping in sweat. I had a lot of pressure in my chest. Then the sharp pain of a headache began. It soon passed, but there would have been no other cause than the chocolate. And what is "moderation" anyway? To me it's not eating the whole box! :) It means something different to everyone.

Where did you read chocolate was ok ? You also say you know it was on the list of food to avoid... and according to the official list from the manafacturer it still is, so perhaps that's for a good reason... as you found out :)

Really?! this has to be the first time I have EVER heard of someone having a chocolate/MAOI reaction. Im glad you're ok.

This just shows that everyone reacts differently...I think that some people are more predisposed to hypertensive episodes than others. (I'm in the "other" category)

I guess I'm lucky..I ate large amounts of chocolate on both Nardil and Parnate with no ill effects, other than weight gain on Nardil! I thought chocolate had been shown not to be the big no-no it was once thought to be..

Although not on an MAOI I also thought chocolate was okay. Did you notify you doc of your reaction? Phillipa

I wonder if the milk was spoilt slightly but the chocolate covered it up. Chocolate milk doesn't have all that much actual chocolate in it, not like a dark chocolate bar.

No, I didn't. The Nardil hasn't been effective yet, and well, part of social phobia is making telephone calls. Plus, what is he going to say? Stop eating chocolate? lol- probably! And I'm not normally a chocolate person. I was just hungry! Nardil really stimulates your appetite.

I've not had any reactions to any chocolate I've consumed, and I've had it in large amounts. Is it possible that it was some other ingredient?

I'm not sure, the only thing in there that was listed on the "foods to avoid" list was chocolate. The other ingredients were just sugar (corn syrup, etc..)

Was it a chocolate with high cacao content? Some dark chocolates are 70 - 80 percent cacao which is loaded with pea!

Hi,
In my many years on Nardil, I ate chocolate in mass quantities. Many others on the board have also. We are all different, but I would be looking for another culprit.
