Wellbutrin for sexual side effects?

Posted by Kimbersaur on September 18, 2008, at 16:30:57

Has anyone here tried Wellbutrin to offset sexual side effects from SSRIs? Did it work?

It gave me partial relief at 150mg. Erections worked again, although orgasm was still delayed, although not as much as before. Are you male or female?

I'm female. So far all SSRIs (Prozac, Celexa) and SNRIs (Effexor, Cymbalta, Pristiq) I've tried have given me anorgasmia. I tried Levitra and it worked but I'm afraid to take it every time. I really want to be able to take Cymbalta or Effexor again - both of them greatly relieved my OCD.

Wellbutrin certainly did increase my sex drive. When I took it by itself, I had the most mind-blowing orgasms I've ever experienced. I also took it in combination with Zoloft. I had "blah" orgasms and a greatly reduced drive, but on Zoloft by itself, I've had absolutely no sex drive. So I guess "partial relief" in combo with an SSRI would describe my experience as well. Too bad WB by itself was so difficult to deal with. Those orgasms were poetic.

Haha thanks! I thought your post was poetic.

I want to try Cymbalta and Wellbutrin but I feel like I may be on too many meds if I did that and I'm afraid to stop one of my current ones.

Being female, you won't have to worry about this but Wellbutrin XL actually gave me erectile dysfunction! I guess everyone is different.

bupropion was one of the meds with very few side effects for me. I think it would be worth a try. You would likely need just a low dose.

By itself, forgetting the fact that it eventually felt like my scalp was on fire and aggravating OCD, Wellbutrin eventually -- well, lets just say it made my libido far higher than anything else, I won't go into the "fun" ? of it but you get the point :)

However, I'm a male and I was in my mid 20s at the time -- I don't know if it does the same thing in females, and to what extent, and if you have OCD, you may or may not have the same experience I did -- that's always a caveat, side effects, but also to remember I report what it did to me like everyone else reports their experiences.

In general though I have heard that more often than not, at least in males, it does raise (okay I have to laugh there, I know, its not funny not to have libido -- male joke) sexual drive.

These are great posts. For those who have had positive effects on libido and orgasms -- how quickly after you started taking the Wellbutrin did this happen? Was it right away, or did it take awhile for it to get in to your system? I have taken it for five days as an addition to only 5mg of Lexapro. Its supposed to offset the sexual side effects. I feel the "lift" in energy and mood, but still no poetic orgasms! Man, I feel robbed!

I started taking Cymbalta 4+ years ago. The side effects were terrible. The doc added WB 150mg and that helped. But, not enough. I put up with the side effects for a long time, knowing that I needed to function properly as a husband, father and employee. Finally, a couple months ago, I'd had enough of mediocre sexual response and went back to my PCP and my PDOC.

Yesterday, they gave me a script for Viagra, which will hopefully get tried tonight. If that doesn't work, the next option is Periactin. If that doesn't work, we may swamp from Cymbalta to Effexor.

Drug holidays did nothing to help me.
