ssri's and social phobia

Posted by mav27 on September 1, 2008, at 9:32:33

Been reading up on the AD's used in social phobia.. i've seen mentioned that the ones approved for use in social phobia are Paxil, Effexor, and Zoloft. Does this mean these are the 3 most likely to workin the ssri/snri class or simply that these are the only ones the people that made them bothered to seek approval for in treating social phobia/ GAD ? Are the other ssri's likely to be as effective ?

I think they are all approved. I personally haven't had luck with them. Heard zoloft was good. Phillipa

No, don't worry about what they are approved for, that just a matter of marketing. There is a little bit of evidence for s-citalopram being a little better. Venlafaxine isn't just an sri and generally has shown some slight superiority. I think picking one based on side effect and interactions (and price) is a better idea. Individuals may have much different responses to different ssris though.

The 3 mentioned were FDA approved for social anxiety, which usually means the Pharm companies paid for the studies to get an approval. Although many anti-depressants can and have been studied for social phobia. Social Phobia is really an anxiety disorder and many Anti-depressants can ease symptoms and prescribed off label for social anxiety.
