Please give me advice....Hyperventilating all day

Posted by WhatToDoNext on August 2, 2008, at 14:25:01

I wake up with it out of my sleep, I've been to the ER twice now and it resolved over a few hours. Both cardiac and pulmonary testing is negative.

They say I'm having a panic attack, but I don't feel panicky at all. I'm am very anxious at times, but it seems like the shortness of breath isn't present when I'm feeling anxious. I've had panic attacks before and I know the sensation I get like the overwhelming feeling of doom, the sweats, rapid HR, etc. None of this is present with my Shortness of Breath.

I don't know what to do.... I can't walk around being short of breath all day. I get dizzy and lightheaded. I had an MRI of my head Friday, results pending. Even if I take a Xanax 1mg, I start to yawn and feel the sedation, yet the shortness of breath continues. I'd say, I have it about 8 hours of the 14 or so I'm awake all day.

I'm only on 50mg of Zoloft, and Xanax XR 1mg bid, Klonopin 1mg bid, Fast acting Xanax prn, but I hardly take it.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear you are feeling this way. The way I read your post, you are quite certain this has nothing to do with your anxiety disorder?

That being said, I would hesitate to offer any advise as you may have something physical going on?

I know sleep apnea, even mild cases, can cause a person to stop breathing momentarily and they will wake up, gasping for breath.
That could cause one to feel anxious, but as I've mentioned, shortness of breath that is "not" related to anxiety should be followed up with your doctor.

Regards, Rick

Agree with above as only times been short of breath was due to panic. Seen a pulmonary doc as you mentioned didn't you? A cardiologist in another thead or am I confusing you with another poster? If so I'm so sorry. Good Luck With finding an answer it's so hard. Phillipa

Obviously, this condition you're experiencing is unbearable and completely unacceptable. If it is panic, your p-doc needs to work with you to get the right med or med combo to keep it in check, at least temporarily. Is psychiatrist or doctor willing to work with you on this? It sounds so terrible. If all your test results come back negative, maybe a higher dose of a benzo or antidepressant or even something like Seroquel perhaps? I'm taking 1.5mg of Klonopin a night now for my anxiety disorder and it doesn't do much. It seems like I would have to take a lot more to manage a full-blown panic attack.

I hope you figure this out and resolve it!

Chris

Hi !

I remember your previous post about this problem. I am sorry to hear it is still ongoing.

Forgive me if you mentioned this already: have you had a sleep apnea test? If you are waking up short of breath and even if it continues into the day, you could well be experiencing the effects of apnea. It wouldn't necessarily show up on a cardio test, either.

Be well,
jflange
