Klonopin + Alcohol

Posted by becksFLA on July 19, 2008, at 14:43:09

No matter how little I drink, I get hangovers in the morning that just dont seem like they should be happening, or at least as bad as they are. Is Klonopin known to cause this?

Thanks

It did the same thing to me too, now that I don't touch a drop of alcohol it works completely differently. Much better!!!

For some reason I was alway able to drink on any benzo and it usually negated the hangover completely except for clonazeapm, which left me in a fog the entire next day with a wicked hangover and massive headache. It felt like my head was full of wet cotton balls.

I'd have to say from my own experience, that clonazepam was the worst med I have ever combined with alcohol in the past.

Interesting as I used to drink with xanax and felt fine when I tried klonopin during the day no alchohol at that time of day I felt suicidal . Wonder if that was why? Phillipa

Okay, we're all human and forgetting religious and cultural objections, we like to tie one on as they say.

I think the reactions of benzodiazepines and alcohol will vary wildly among people, but in general the warning would probably be, don't drink as much as you used to, and if you have to, you might not be able to drink at all, or drink only occasionally.

My tolerance has gone way down, but there's some habituation to benzodiazepines going on at the same time, so its anyone's guess.

I have been taking Klonopin for 10 years and like to drink socially. I have not noticed this effect, but think it is completely possible because every med affects everyone differently.

Drank beer for years on low doses of benzos and never had a problem or got drunk it was when I stopped drinking that the problems began. Maybe should start the six pack of corona and lime again at night. Slept like a baby and felt so wonderful in the morning. Phillipa

Yes, Jan, you have mentioned the six pack many a time, but do you really want cirrhosis?

In the short term you might "feel wonderful in the morning" but I doubt many people could say that 24/7 use of 6 drinks a night would be terribly healthful for them. For you, maybe it works, for most others thats a terrible sign of alcoholism.

And of course problems could start when you stopped drinking -- alcohol withdrawal sounds like a likely candidate.

I'm not a teetotaler and I'm not trying to curb your alcohol habits, but that's sort of what it sounds like, withdrawals.

Anyhow, just a point

Jay haven't had a drink in 14 years. And at my age cirrohsis doesn't bother me as it takes a lot of years to develop. In the l4 years off alchohol my sister still drinks as much and takes her xanax and is working. No cirrhosis for her. Thanks for the warning though. Love Phillipa

I know Jan -- I wasn't trying to single you out, I was just pointing out that can lead to a trap for people to self-medicate. Not to mention that amount of beer exceeds gaining a pound a week for someone who doesn't have a fast metabolism.

Jay you just answered a question for me as it seems like I've always metabolized meds quickly hence the waking at night for more and my high tolerence. I know you weren't signaling me out it's fine. Love Jan

I have noticed that if I drink alcohol while on my low dose of Klonopin( almost off now) I feel kind of ill. I can only drink one glass of wine, and I always regret it. Hence, I have stopped drinking while on the benzos. I will be benzo free in a week, so I might have a glass of wine and see if if affects me the same way. I also notice that I get a headache.
