Lamictal dilema...any suggestions?

Posted by NewHampshireGuy on June 22, 2008, at 9:34:05

So I have been taking Lamictal for about 21 days now. I started at 25mg for 14 days and have been on 50 mg for a week now

I immediately noticed a difference of it bringing me out of my manic state about 3 days after taking 25mg. I don't think it was normal/natural remission, as I felt better about 6 hours after the first time I tried my first dose

my question is: I have not noticed any more difference at all going up in a dose (in fact I feel a little more manic from going up/weird reaction I have with almost every med I have ever tried, I am very sensitive), but I know theurapeutic doses are supposedly 100mg minimum

my huge concern is I know this is a medication you can just stop taking, so I am affraid to stay on it another month to get to 100mg and then find out it's not the med for me.

will being on it that long be hard to get off for me? will it be ok to just stop it cold turkey after a month/two or so if it's not working for me?

is 100mg the definite thereputic dose?

many thanks

50mg is nothing, i take 300. The average dose is 200. You're being impatient, lamictal is subtle and it requires getting to that right dose. Once you hit 100mg you can start going up 100mg at a time or so. Its just that first 100mg that takes forever.

The alternatives are lithium, topamax and dekapote. But all of them have considerable side effect profiles in comparison to lamictal

Initially, when we were just learning about how to use lamictal for depression, 25-50mg was all that was recommended. It does work for some people at that low of a dose. Max is 400mg per day. Give ur pdoc ur experience with it and see what he thinks, he knows u best.

Good luck!
