Parnate and Dental Surgery (need to know fast)

Posted by Cheryl-Lynn on June 2, 2008, at 19:35:34

Has anyone who has or is on Parnate, had dental surgery while taking Parnate?
I'm meeting with my dentist tomorrow to discuss it, so any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I just started with a new dentist and we're going to do some extensive work...I quess there is an med in freezing that helps stop bleeding and she said she would have to leave that out...

I'm not sure if you're going to be put "under" or if surgery is going to be done under local...

I had to go off parnate for major surgery...but it was a 3 hour surgery and they wanted the safest environment possible.

Do you think your surgery can be done with freezing?

Unfortunately I have to be knocked out for dental work as the nerves to my teeth never fully freeze. I've neglected my teeth for two years, so I know I'll need work - this will be the first time needing it while on Parnate if the dentist will do it and I'm just so afraid that he'll (or the anesthesiologist) refuse.

Yes; I had dental surgery around three weeks ago, and I am on Parnate. No problem. I have even had surgery while on Parnate. They just need to know about it so they don't give you certain drugs that would be really bad for you. Anesthesioloists know what is okay, and what is not. With oral surgery, they would know too. I was not knocked out, just local anesthetic. I had a tooth break off from ECT, and they tried to put the cap back on, but it would not stay, and so I had basically no tooth except in and under the gum, and I had developed an awful absess. So, I had to have that drained too plus stitches, etc. Not pleasant, but I survived the ordeal while continuing with Parnate.

I had cervical spine surgery two different times while on Parnate. I think it depends on the anesthesiologist and how comfortable he or she is with the Parnate. They know how to handle things with a person on Parnate; it is just a matter of making sure that they don't give certain meds. Some anesthesiologists have told me they don't even use the drugs anymore that would harm you if you were on Parnate. Depends on where you go, I guess. I was at a major university hospital in a major city.

That sounds sooo painful. So, did they knock you out fully?

This is good news to hear and it alleviates my fears. Thanks you so much for taking the time to explain this to me dear. I feel much more calm about my appointment tomorrow.

No; I was not knocked out; I just had like novacaine. It started to wear off before he started and I was moaning in pain. He told me I had to stop making noice as other peoplel were there, and I would scare them. I told him later he was a real jerk, and he denied his comments. His assistant backed me up. Poor girl probably got fired. I hope I never see him again as long as I live. It was very trauatic.

I have had oral surgery with parnate. You need to tell your dentist, and emphasize that he needs to use certain anesthetics and not others-- my pdoc wanted only fast-acting novocaine and nothing with norepinephine-- But dentists should know this. I personally checked to make sure what my dentist did or didn't know about Maois-- to be on the safe side.

Anything they use should have no interactions with Maois-- but there's no reason not to have the surgery.
