Can Valium (diazepam) cause depression?

Posted by Maria3667 on May 17, 2008, at 7:28:24

Hi all,

Since switching from Klonopin to Valium, I sort of feel in an increase in depression (and sadness). Has anyone had this happen to them?

Is it a short term side effect or here to stay?

Thanks for your answers!
Take care,
Maria

My Psychiatrist thinks valium has a very depressive effect that does not wear off - but increases with continued use.
He says ativan or klonopin are better.

All benzodiazepines have a CNS depressant effect -- and some have therefore a notable depressive effect on some people.

I believe its something that generally remains, for how long I don't know. I think if a particular one is causing problems then tapering to another one may not.

Yes, people say that Xanax has an antidepressant effect, but I think that is more the super elation that some people get -initially- which can eventually wear off. Xanax is definitely not an antidepressant in its own right.

Hi Phillipa,

I was only on Klonopin for 1 week but switched straight off from Klonopin (because of the severe sexual side effects) to Valium. The latter is making me so down in the dumps I'm afraid to continue taking it.
In fact, I'm even considering the anorgasmia of Klonopin is preferable to the depression of Valium... !
Can't win this situation, can I?

Love,
Maria

I don't know the answer to your question, whether Valium is causing an increase in depression.

However, be careful of the fallacy of "post hoc ergo prompter hoc" -- attributing causation to coincidence. Just because you started feeling more depressed after you started taking Valium, does not necessarily mean that the Valium is responsible. Many times in my life, I have suddenly started feeling more depressed, with no obvious outside causation.

Again, I don't know and neither does anyone else. It may be. Just don't jump to conclusions.
