Lamictal Insomnia

Posted by pedr on April 25, 2008, at 15:09:58

Hi all,
I started 25mg/day Lamictal on Monday (4 days ago). Side-effects have been mild. However yesterday I felt completely "wired" like I'd just drank a pot of strong coffee. I couldn't sleep until 4am and was wide awake again at 7am. The previous day I got 4 hours sleep. Now I don't even feel tired either, which is unnatural!

Has anyone else experienced this at 25mg? I can only find posts saying that it occurs above 125mg and would like to know if I'm alone in this side-effect and if not, how long it might last (before I really begin to resemble a zombie).

Much obliged,
Pete

Hi,

I'm also having early-morning waking up -- several times between 2 am and 7 am. I'm only on 12.5 mg of Lamictal. Next week, I will increase to 25mg and I'm concerned about this side-effect.

Sorry you're having the early waking but I'm happier now someone else has that on a low dose too =o]

It's the falling asleep element that concerns me more although I have to say that my apartment is considerably cleaner thanks to a 3am "try and use up some energy" spring clean =o]

It goes away when you get on a stable dose. Like i said in a previous thread once you get to a certain dose and are on it for a while some people find it sedating and other people find it gets them wired. Its both in my experience.

Expect a day or two of insomnia everytime you bump a dose.

Was on it twice and got up to 50mg and didn't notice tiredness or insomnia just excess splitting. Could it be due to a different diagnosis and that I take valium and some xanax at night. Diagnosis for me is depression/anxiety. Hope they go away for both of you. Phillipa

I'm glad you're able to be productive when you wake up so early. With me it just makes me super anxious (but still lethargic, if that makes any sense).

Yes, it's a pretty unusual experience for me - being productive. That said I feel like my guts are squirming (I also have IBS-C) and I can't stay still for one minute. I'll take what I can get though =)

thanks man, that's reassuring. My shrink says to take it in the a.m. but since I'm wired 24 hours a day, I can't see that doing anything.

I started out at 25mg and I was relaxed at first for about an hour and then after that I was stimulated the rest of the day. I became hypomanic in a sense but I was not causing any mishaps or repercussions that would affect me. After I got to 50mg I felt like I was taking nothing basically. I didn't feel depressed nor manic. Like most people say. It does depend on the person. I have a few questions if you don't mind?

Are you or have you suffered from insomnia in the past?

What dosage of lamictal are you currently taking?

The Best of Luck!

Hi Twinch,
Are you or have you suffered from insomnia in the past?
-- only when on other meds, almost never when I'm taking nothing.

What dosage of lamictal are you currently taking?
-- 25mg. I'm on 25mg for 1 more week, according to the dosing schedule.

As it happens, as dbc said earlier in the thread, the insomnia has subsided and I'm getting 6-7 hours sleep again which is great.

Thanks for the post,
Pete

How odd that people can have such a different reaction.

I'm on 50 mg and it stabilizes my mood and keeps me from getting agitated, sometimes to the point of not caring about stuff but that's better than the manic alternative. I cut back for 3 months to 25 mg and my anxiety went up.

This is the end of the thread.
