what dosage of Abilify are/were you on?

Posted by med_empowered on April 17, 2008, at 20:16:46

Just out of curiousity, I thought I'd poll and see what dosages people are taking of Abilify (or were taking). I'm personally on 20mgs, for bipolar disorder.

20mg

I am happy to see that you have recanted many of your previous statements regarding a perceived absolute and global condemnation for using neuroleptics or other psychotropics. Although imperfect, I'm glad they are there when we need them. For many, modern psychopharmacology is currently their best choice for treatment.

Gene therapy, I believe, will be a monumental improvement in the treatment of many illnesses, including biological mental illness.

neuroleptics...

now that I'm on a good dose w/other meds to help out, I see that modern psychiatry can help out..that said, I think alot of times the neuroleptics are over-used. I think my prob is seeing kids given serqoeul (for instance) for behavioral problems, or people being given antipsychotics for anxiety when a cheaper (and safer) BZD would do the trick at least as well. These are still serious drugs (although they beat the safety record of Haldol, that's for sure), so I just want shrinks to be more selective in how they use them...also, antipsychotic polypharmacy (like Geodon+Zyprexa, etc.) freaks me out; I don't understand why so many people seem to be on these expensive and confusing combos.

I am hoping that you are just that much closer to finding your answer.

I was taking 5mg of abilify until I had a nasty dissociative/fugue/psychotic episode. Then it was raised to 10mg. I felt an instant deep calm. And I've been on 10mg for about 3 mos now.

Regarding neuroleptic polypharmacy--
I also take zyprexa zydis 10mg for acute emergencies. Usually when I feel the need to hurt myself via escaping reality and abandoning consequences. That's about 4x in 6mos.

I think your neuroleptic polypharmacy is a little bit different. Some people (it seems like maybe a lot of people, I don't know) are on daily combos of two or more neuroleptics...there's not any data backing doing that long term, at least not that I know of.

Personally, having taken zyprexa and abilify, I can see how an as-needed Zyprexa would have a beneficial effect...but that's different from taking it daily with a daily abillify. Those kind of combos just strike me as needlessly expensive and possibly dangerous.

I take 20 for depression. I used to take 30. I don't seem to have side effects from it and it seems to really help me. :)

Best,
