Nardil: how long should I stay at 45 mg before

Posted by 4WD on March 28, 2008, at 10:50:24

upping the dosage to 60? I have been on 45 mg for three weeks now and have noticed a modest improvement. My anxiety is much better but I am still depressed and anhedonic. Is three weeks long enough of a trial at 45mg? Should I go ahead and raise it to 60 or give it longer at 45 to work?

I am still having some side effects at 45 mostly constipation, afternoon fatigue and terrible dry mouth. I tried 60mg yesterday and have absolutely no saliva in my mouth last night or today.

How long is an adequate trial at 45mg?

Thanks to all who reply.

more than necessary. I'd like to stay at the lowest effective dosage.

Marsha know it's not a med I've tried or taken but on another thread since it's still a short time at 45mg can you give your pdoc a call and see if he wiil say the 45mg is enough for a while longer. You're doing so well on the anxiety side. That's wonderful. I wish you luck. Phillipa

Marsha: I know where you are coming from. I wanted as much of this drug to get fully into my system as quickly as possible. But according to my pdoc, it does not work this way: It's about the time or duration of Nardil in your system, not the quantity.

You have to make your own decisions, but if it were me, Id stay at 45. Please keep posting your experiences, Michael

I actually found the quantity made a difference in how long it took to work. For eg 45mg took 12 weeks to work, 60mg took 3 weeks and 90mg took just under 2 weeks. However what i did was as soon as i felt it starting to work i cut the dose down to 30mg other wwise the side effects hit very sudden and very hard on 60 and 90mg.

Hi,

I have decided to stay at 45 for at least 8 weeks. I went to 60 for a couple of days and the side effects more or less doubled. I am feeling enough better that I think I can wait it out now. Part of it is that I want to be as little medication as possible and if there is a chance it will work at 45, I want to take it. I am feeling enough better that I think I can stand to wait it out. A big part of it is that I don't want to be on any more medication than I absolutely have to be.

It is tempting to go to 60 and have it work faster but all things considered I think I'd do better to stay a 45 a while longer and see what happens.

Thanks to both of you who responded.

Marsha

Marsha is it really that long? Hard to believe. What's the klonopin and geodon at now? Think you're smart about the lowest dose it it works. As you're small in stature and weight right? Love Phillipa keep posting

Well,it's been 4 weeks on Thursday that I've been on Nardil 45. I guess I can wait another 6weeks. I've made it this far.

I'm taking 2mg Klonopin and using Valium 5-7.5mg a day to taper the Klonopin with. I think I'll probably stay on the Klonopin. I'll be happy if I can get it down to 2mg a day with no Valium.

yes, I only weigh about 110. I've read that 45 mg will kick in if I just give it long enough. And I'm enough better now that I can stand to wait.

how are you?

Marsha

I haven't gained or lost. The food cravings were one of the side effects I was most scared of but they haven't happened at all. I am grateful for that.

Put simply, Nardil works for me for a few months then starts to fade. Dropping the dose then increasing it again seems to set it off again. But is there anything we can do about the weight gain and sexual side effects? I have a poor appetite so that is not causing the weight gain. Thanks everyone
Fred

I think I might be gaining a little weight too although I don't eat much, don't havae cravings, etc. and walk every day. Buy it's only been a couple or three pounds. I can live wit the sexual side effects if it gives me my life back.

Only major problems are hypotension and suddenly after five weeks, waking up at three in the morning and not being able to go back to sleep. I can nap during the day though.
