Help for a friend -- EQUIPMENT NEEDED!

Posted by Maurie on June 29, 1998, at 17:58:47

I was stopped by a friend after church Sunday. SHe said that she needed someone to talk to. We talked. She told me that she hates her job. She had a flu last week and her response was "Oh, good! I have a temperature of 101 so I can stay in bed and sleep all day!" SHe was in bed for eight days.

She feels that if she were following God's plan for her life she would be happy. She is unhappy so she isn't following God's plan. I think she believes that I am a more mautre Christian so she approached me to help her figure out what God's plan for her is. "WHy is God letting me continue to breathe? Wouldn't everything be better if I didn't?"

Gulp!

I asked her if she thought she might be depressed. She affirmed, but said "so what". Many years ago she had an addiction to Pain meds following a back injury. She says NO to drug therapies.

I confessed ignorance and asked her if I could have time to educate myself. She agreed.

I checked with her late in the afternoon to let her know I heard her and was listening and responding.

I have been surfin' lots today.

NPR ran a story tonight about stress, depression and Police work. In it they mentioned some new research about DHEA levels being elevated with PSY therapy and levels of cortosol (SP ?) decreasing.

My first recommendation of a therapist was turned down flat.

What I need (I think!) are ways to get her in the hands of a pro. I am way outta my league, but i've all she has at this moment.

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks!
Maurie

I think that makes sense. Two possibilities might
be (1) to emphasize to her that medications for
depression aren't addicting like those for pain and
(2) to offer to accompany her to a pro.

Good luck!

That was a very timely and helpful response, Bob. I particularly like the way you assisted both the poster and her friend. Keep up the good work.

Sorry I dont agree. These drugs may not be addicting but they are very hard to withdraw from,
have multiple side effects and are not very effective anyway. I find it best to be very wary of "pros" and suggest researching other options first.

I wasn't paying attention to the accuracy of the advice Dubya, just that she got some at all.

Someone with one who is familiar with alternatives can also be a pro, this is not something a friend wants to take on solo for sure. What I was trying to say is getting her to do something is better than telling her the only thing available is the thing she doesn't want. Sometimes if you can get a person in to talk to a trained counselor who finds something that helps - not speciifically the thing I suggested, I'm just using it as an example- and the person relaxes a little because they start to see a choice and the choice is theirs, they open up to other ideas about what they could do.
