I've tried both.

1.) Lunesta works better for me to help me fall asleep AND maintain sleep throughout the night. It leaves me a little groggy for a couple hours in the morning, and the bitter aftertaste is nasty, but other than that it's great.

2.) Sonata (no longer available in Canada) is very short acting and fairly mild in my experience. It helped me to fall asleep at a higher dose, but I would often have to take a second pill in the middle of the night if I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. My Dr. was OK with this. No hangover or side effects whatsoever unless I took a second pill too close to my wake up time.

Both work OK. If sleep onset is the only problem then Sonata might be a good pick. If onset and maintenance are issues then Lunesta might be a bit better. Sonata seems to be milder than Lunesta in my opinion. Just my opinion based on my own experiences.

I take Lunesta. It is the one that works the best and leaves me the least groggy in the am. I have not tried sonata unless there is another name for it? Sometimes the lunesta works well and other times it doesn't for me.. Lately I wake up every two hours. STill i will stick with this one. I think it is me rather than the drug aausing the problems

the after taste is terrible.. makes ure you don't let it sit in yur mouth while you get water!!

sonata-
I have probs falling asleep due to anxiety and being a very easily disturbed sleeper.

I often find myself awakened in the middle of the night (like 4 am) and cannot fall asleep again.

the short halflife of sonata means that I can take a pill at 4 am if I need too.

Phillipa,

Like Lunesta, Ambien, etc., Sonata is a Schedule IV controlled drug, and it can be addictive and lead to physical and psychological dependence. It's not a silver bullet unfortunately. The only non-scheduled "new" sleep med that I'm aware of is Rozerem.

Figures but bet it's less addictive than valium and might be a way to cut down on it? Think so? Thanks Phillipa

I think it's supposed to be less addictive than the traditional benzos, although other countries are starting to treat the "Z" drugs just like any other benzo. It might help you cut down on Valium use. It's worth a try.

Thanks Phoenix as if it worked when waking early am I'd be down by 5mg back to my baseline of three years ago and I didn't ask to go to 20 the pdoc said take 20 so I did. I needed it then. Phillipa
