adderall+lexapro SE's:long post:in need of advice

Posted by elanor roosevelt on December 30, 2007, at 18:45:31

This is long but I am in great need of advice.

For many years I have had problems with meds and the inside of my mouth.
I tend to "worry" my mouth anyway, but the meds cause drymouth and this nervous sucking thing or fidgeting with my toungue. Additionally, Lexapo causes a clenching of the teeth.
I have lost almost all my molars and have cracked a few caps.

Every so often the irritation in my mouth gets extreme.

A few days ago I felt like I hade been chewing on razor blades. I took a look with a flashlight and I found sores everywhere. I thought I had a strep infection or coxsackie virus. Went to my MD and he told me they were ulcers that are usually the result of a trauma to the mouth.
He gave me MethylPrednisolene to take down the swelling and asked me to come back and talk because theses ulcerations are considered pre-cancerous. After another 36 hours of extreme discomfort and lots of jello I was okay.

These mouth problems have been nasty for years. They were a problem on the adderall an then i added lexapro and now here I am.

I am taking Trivastal, lexapro, adderall, xanax (rarely) and ambien.

after 2 days off i took the adderall today and now, in evening, i am doing the damn mouth thing.
i know lexapro is out of the question and tianeptine was just as bad on the mouth.

I am thinking of:
Trivastal 50 mg 2x daily
B12
Folic Acid
L-Tryptophan 1g

might the trytophan cause less SE's?
Seratonin is a plus for me and i would like to figure this out

I would also continue adderall 3 days out of 4 if i could find a way to transition out without destroying my mouth

any ideas?
my pmed doc has been giving up on me lately
thanks

hey..sorry about your mouth woes. That really, really sucks. Have you tried Niacinamide? Its like a benzo when you take high enough doses (several grams, sometimes 500-1,000mgs/day is all it takes, though).

The other vitamins seem good to me, but you might want to run it past people at the alternatives board. Also, if antidepressants are problematic, adderall might even things out (or make things worse)...you just have to test the waters and see. Since its an amphetamine, it will kick in and off fast enough to see if you can keep taking it.
Personally, I take pretty high doses of niacinamide when I need it (sometimes over 10 grams), and it works wonders at calming me down, which i imagine is part of the problem with you. Does xanax help? Xanax can be kind of stimulating, especially with an antidepressant on board, but alone (w/o the lexapro) it might be helpful, too.

Good luck

I am going to cut out everything tomorrow and give my mouth time to heal

I don't think it's the trivastal

the lexapro and adderall trigger this behavior

it isn't generalized nervousness

in a few days i will think more clearly on how to re-introduce everything. trivastal might be the only innocent. in fact, i have expected it to increase saliva flow

i can't even frind the terminology for this behavior
it's common OCD stuff
my dad used to do it and it drove me nuts
look at me now
my mouth hurts

hasn't anyone else experienced this?

Be sure to watch out for side effects should you quit your meds cold turkey. U may wanna take lower doses of stuff in between off days.
