Solution for Zyprexa weight gain issue?

Posted by 4WD on December 27, 2007, at 15:45:28

I have found that if I take 100mg Provigil along with the 7.5 mg Zyprexa it cancels out the Zyprexa induced hunger to a very large extent. The Zyprexa makes me want to eat everything in sight and the Provigil makes me not want to eat at all so it balances out nicely. Unfortunately, while the Provigil helps with energy and motivation, it sure makes me jittery. Even on the Zyprexa which normally stops the jitters.

I don't have a solution and the Provigil makes me jittery too.
It is the only thing that gives me an appetite though- I have actually gained weight on this drug, probably due to its effect on orexin receptors.
It sounds like the Provigil is the solution to the weight gain issue, but now you have an anxiety problem. That is what these drugs are best at doing- they may solve one problem, but they create as many problems as they solve.
Maybe you can live with the jitters?

> I already have the jitters. I'm being treated by my pdoc for depression and severe anxiety and take Klonopin 2mg bid, Celexa 10mg, and Trazadone 100mg at night. This is in addition to the Zyprexa and Provigil. I was also on Trileptal but it wasn't helping much at all so tonight I switch to Gabitril 4mg.

I can't believe Provigil gives you an appetite. It completely takes mine away. I don't really like the way Provigil makes me feel--it's too speedy feeling. But if I'm going to take Zyprexa I'm going to have to take Provigil. I'm a recovering bulimic and if I take Zyprexa alone, I will be bingeing and purging constantly.

I was on Geodon for a while but just switched to the Zyprexa a couple of days before Christmas when I got suicidal. Zyprexa has always been my "emergency" med. But for now, it's going to replace the Geodon. The Geodon was great for about six months, then pooped out.

Glucopage (Metformin), a diabetes drug, is showing help with weightloss, and even some mood stablization (small studies are showing). I have begun taking it, and my weight is dropping finally!!!!!

I take a high dose of zyprexa 30mgs (gained 50lbs)
