I need to up my Synthroid b/c I'm hypothyroid but whenever we try, I get really anxious. We're trying again, going every-other-day. Have others experienced this? If so, does it go away?

No opposite lower dose and numbers between 1-2 seem to up my anxiety. I've never heard of sythroid doing this but there is pleanty I don't know. But since different colors designate different strenghts do you think the coloring or fillers could be causing this? But if you google synthroid it was never approved by FDA and was grandfathered in. How did they do that? Do you think something else might work better? Phillipa

I don't know much about thyroid. The little I do know is that many people do best on a T3+T4 combo, not just one or the other. Some people do better with Armour Thyroid. If the primary symptom is low body temp, then a compounded pharmacy version of an extended release T3 is good.
But thyroid is closely tied to adrenal gland function. If your adrenal gland is stressed or hypofunctional, increasing thyroid function will stress it further and cause all sorts of things including anxiety. Your doc would likely not know anything about it, and likely would not approve, but if you suspect sluggish adrenal glands you could try adrenal cortex extracts along with the thyroid meds. To know for sure how the adrenals are behaving, you could for about $100 do a 24 hour cortisol test, where you spit in a test tube 4 times a day and your saliva cortisol is measured at the lab to determine your levels versus normal at varying times of the day. A one time test is useless since cortisol follows a specific daily pattern, thus the need to test it 4 times in a 24 hour period. I visit mercury chelation forums and this is a popular topic there, because practically everyone with heavy metal burden has adrenal and thyroid problems, and when they treat the thyroid alone without first beefing up the adrenals they run into troubles. The two glands work in harmony. You can't affect one without affecting the other.

I have the same problem only I take Armour. I've found that if my ferritin is low (below 30) I can't increase my medicine. When it's over 50 (preferred is 70-90) I can increase it with no problem. Have you had your ferritin checked?

Why do you need to up Synthroid? How do you feel?
Don't go by numbers alone (labs)

Are u taking any other meds? NE meds? Too much caffeine? Something like Ultram?
R temps low or high? Your might be hyperthyroid if you upped too fast. How much Synthroid r u taking.....Check out Mary Shoman's about thyroid site...It has very basic info about ALL things thyroid. florence

My dr upped the dose of generic synthroid a few months ago. It was hard to get adjusted to because of anxious and nervous feelings. After about a week or so i felt better. To make it easier i used the lesser dose every other morning. Maybe you can gradually go up to the higher dose.
It feels like the right dose is lower than what the dr says the lab test shows...i feel better on the lower dose. i sleep better and am more relaxed. Yes- i can relate to feeling anxious because of thyroid med, too.
