Anxiety/depression med question

Posted by rskontos on November 30, 2007, at 15:10:06

HI guys, I have been trying to figure this out just by reading the boards and following the posts but I am lost. What is the best anxiety/depression med that isn't an SSRI (AD). I have only tried cymbalta (on it for almost a year and heck to get off) and lexapro. the amount I need to be on is too sedating. Plus the weight gain I can't handle. I was wondering if a different type would be better. THe lexapro helped me with my general anxiety and severe depression. I am in therapy (talking) and things are getting deep and messy and loads of triggers. I may have waited too long for the meds. I don't have a p-doc only a neuro and therapist. The neuro is the one prescribing for me at the moment with therapist approval. I sent off the lexapro as I had to go down to 5 mg. to get the least sedation effect and didn't think that was doing much and based on lack of withdrawals probably wasn't. I only went up to 10 mgs. of lex. Neuro thought I should go up to 20 mgs. but at 10 mgs. I was sleeping 12 hours a night and getting up and wanting to go back to bed. Plus the lack of sex is an issue at my house. SO AD's don't seem right. Any ideas? I am ok at present but based on when I went off of cymbalta last time I can be ok without one for a while but I think I will not be ok for the long haul. Therapy will be a longhaul. So I probably need to know what I need and if I need to find a p-doc and get my neuro to recommend one since my therapist seems reluctant. Thanks for any suggestions.

Nardil would be the best, but it's hard to get a doctor to prescribe it. Worth a shot though.

Yes, because it's an MAOI. :)

My eyes are burning so badly today and not sure why. Thanks for the response maxi, I suppose I really need a p-doc for that med and my therapist for some reason is reluctant for me to get one, I think i will ask why.

Why are SSRI's the first line AD's to prescribe. rk

Safest. TCA's can committ OD and die, Maoi's the dietary part and lots of side effects. What about EMSAM? Supposed to be stimulating and a patch. But you do need a pdoc when dealing with meds and correct doseages. Yes ask the therpist sounds strange to I. Phillipa

You'd have a better chance of no sexual side effects on Emsam than Nardil but Nardil is generally better for anxiety becasue it effects GABA. You could also just take a benzo along with Emsam to curb the anxiety. Or alternatively, take something more stimulating in addition to Lexapro to help with the Lethargy/Energy. I think Lexapro/Wellbutrin is a comon combo. Best to get in with a P-doc though to go down the combo road.

I am going to ask my neuro for a p-doc referral just to have one that might be a good one. I like her so she might be good for a referral. she knows most of my history. I think I will ask my therapist why she is reluctant to recommend a pdoc.

Thanks for all the suggestions.. rk
