hypertensive crisis

Posted by missjulie on November 28, 2007, at 14:55:59

Saw an older thread about how do you know if you having a hypertensive crisis and had to post... been on parnate 6 months or so no problems like that until I (accidentally) ate some smoked bacon... had been very cautious for months but ate plenty of bacon no problem so didn't even think about this... BELIEVE ME YOU'LL KNOW when you have one... never had a headache like that in my life... couldn't sit or lie down, could only pace and grab my head... alternate hot and cold flashes... throwing up... felt like I might actually die and didn't care. Was all alone and couldn't drive so just waited it out. Passed in about 4 hours. Felt sick for a week afterward. I will never eat bacon again, ever. I wanted to get off Parnate, ASAP, but my dr. convinced me to stay on... told me to be more careful... wouldn't prescribe anything to carry with me in case it happened again!! I really thought I had been being careful... but as someone told me once, this medicine is no joke... I really wonder if it's worth it now. Once again afaid to eat anything. Anyway, just had to say... hope it never happens to anyone here... but if it does, trust me.. you won't be wondering if maybe your having one.

What do you mean by smoked bacon? Just regular Armour bacon 'cuz I eat that too and I wouldn't think it was a NO-NO.

It's lucky you say the feeling passed in four hours but you should have called your doc or a friend at the very least, although that would have ended up with a visit to the ER and all that that entails.

Were you serious about wanting to die? What would be worse would be having a stroke and being unable to speak or move one side and living like that. I think that would be worse than dying so you're lucky you didn't have that happen to you.

You doc sounds somewhat naive about the MAO's, I wonder how many users of these meds are given something to counteract the hypertensive reaction should one occur.

I hope Parnate is working great despite that scarey reaction you had. You are lucky to have come out of that. Did you ever check your BP at all that week. Have you ever thought about getting a BP cuff to check it if this occurs again? No one really knows what kind of reaction they are having unless they are able to know how high their BP is. It all depends on the food you eat and how much of it. Yours might have gone up but not as high as some reactions, but with the
vomiting and all I think your BP was probably seriously high.

My reaction went to 230/130 but I had Nifedepine which brought it down in about an hour. Between the pill and the BP cuff I was able to avoid the ER and perhaps death or a stroke.

Happy you are still with us, Miss Julie.
