One scary thing about Seroquel...

Posted by Sheilac on November 8, 2007, at 10:19:35

While I love the sleep I get from Seroquel, I am questioning how safe it is.

I only take 50mg. but I have noticed that I cannot have any alcohol. I had a few drinks over the weekend and I actually blacked out. I guess it was a functioning blackout. I did things that I don't have any memory of.

This is scary to me. While I love the sleep I am finally getting, I am wondering if this is really a drug I should be on.

I used to take Klonopin for sleep - but it made me depressed. Xanax is ok - just not strong enough.

Shelac have you talked with your pdoc about all the things going on with you and your fears and don't think alchohol would be good to take with seroquel. Phillipa

I don't see my doc again until December. I know you should never drink while taking any of these drugs, but sometimes it is nice to have a drink or two. I've never had a problem with any other drugs. I guess its the price you pay for good sleep?

This is the same effect as Trazodone and alcohol.

You're probably a bit sensitive to Seroquel and alcohol -- I have drunk on it but I don't drink any more. It really isn't recommended actually, but I won't go into a debate about a legal intoxicant.

The alcohol potentiates orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure), and CNS depression.

I take seroquel but I don't drink, my sister takes seroquel and has had a similar reaction to you. Her pdoc said don't drink on seroquel it can make you do crazy things. A patient of his attacked a taxi, not the driver or anything like that but just the car. And it does say on the label not to drink with this medication. Take care

I take zyprexa, celexa, and wellbutrin sr, and drink with no problems. I've never taken seroquel, but maybe if you don't take the 2 at the same time, that won't happen. Don't take the seroquel that night, or take it as soon as you are in bed.

I take 50 mg Seroquel at night. I'm sensitive to drink already from the Namenda, but the alcohol & gabapentin give me that extra boost when I really need to go to sleep. I don't like benzos, because like you they depress me, and Ambien makes me hallucinate.

mixing downers lol

Sheilac:

I am sorry about the reaction you are having. Thats the first time I have heard about anything like that, and I have taken Seroquel for three years. However, every med affects everybody differently.

To me, Seroquel seems like one of the safer meds out there, especially compared to other APs such as Lamictal and Zyprexa.

Are you taking only Seroquel? I know when I was taking Seroquel alone, I could drink and drink and never get a buzz. It was weird. So I cut back on drinking. So maybe it was a good thing for me. Michael
