my meds--opinions?

Posted by harry_in_philly on November 7, 2007, at 20:41:27

Please let me know of your opinions for this. Background info: Adult, 29y.o. Dxed w/ GAD, ADD, and depression w/anxiety. These are what my psychiatrist prescribed:

MEDS

Dexedrine Spansule 15mg - 1x day (morning)
Ludiomil 150mg 1x day (bedtime)
Tranxene SD 22.5mg 1xday

I really like my "pdoc" and hope that these meds help. Only one issue, should I be concerned of his age? He is 86 years old. Thanks
harry

Where are you located? I ask because those are some ... interesting choices...

Ludiomil is an older drug, which may or may not be a good choice for you. It's hard to know, since I don't know what else you've tried. It's a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, with a fair number of side effects which may not be pleasant. Tranxene is another one that I haven't seen prescribed lately. Dexedrine is a standard psychostimulant, and it works well for a lot of people, there's about a gazillion years worth of experience with it, so it's well known and pretty predictable.

Here's the thing: the relationship you have with your pdoc is arguably the most important part of your treatment. If you like and trust your pdoc, that's far more than half the battle right there. In that case, I'd strongly recommend trying to work out any bugs there might be in the prescribing, rather than switching doctors.

So, what other medications have you tried? And what symptoms are most troublesome for you? How long have you been on these drugs, and how are they working so far?

For what it's worth, if this combo works for you, you can get a lot of the same effects -- probably with fewer side effects -- with Strattera alone...

Good luck. And, since I don't recognize your name and don't know if you've just changed it, welcome to Babble. If you've been around a while, forgive me, but if you're new here, welcome! I hope you find as much education and support here as I have.

Yeah, the ludiomil is an older antidepressnant. Don't necessarily conclude that he is prescribing this med on account of lack of knowledge of newer meds.

A lot of research shows that newer antidpressants are no more effective than older ones. They have a different side effect profile, but if you are tollerating the side effects and you think it is helping then that whats most important.

You didn't say at what time of day you were taking the tanxene. I'm assuming at night for sleep. The very best pdoc prescribed me ludiomil and I took it at bedtime had to work as a nurse the next day and didn't really fall asleep all night kind of in a semisleep state. But the next day at work was the hardest ever went through . I was a zombie and that was my second try with a TCA. SSRI's weren't out yet. Was just on benzos then and stayed just on them. What's your diagnosis and yes what other meds have you been on? I've been diagnosed w/ GAD and ADD. I've tried virtually all the SSRIs and all have been horrible in terms of side effects. I liked wellbutrin..worked well for me re: depression. Later diagnosed w/ ADD (Which dexy seems to work for) and was taken off of wellbutrin due to the interaction w/ amphetamines. I've also tried effexor (did nothing) and remeron (gained way too much weight.) Thanks for your posts.
