Started Marplan today

Posted by tecknohed on October 22, 2007, at 16:33:21

I'm to start on 20mg/day & increase to 40mg/day in my own time. Thankfully, I managed to persuade my pdoc to keep me on 3mg/day clonazepam, though he was rather hesitant (I increased from 1.5mg to 3mg without him knowing so he wasn't too pleased!).

I'll keep posting my progress.

Umm...thats it!

I've already tried Marplan in the past, for 3 weeks. IT IS (was) A POWERFULL ANTIDEPRESSANT! A bit too activating though (for me). This time I have Klonopin so that shouldn't be a problem (I hope!).

It also had hardly any sexual side effects & DID NOT cause ANY sedation.

I will indeed let you know how it goes this time around.

Its only dangerous if YOU'RE dangerous with it. Follow all dietry & medicinal restrictions PRECISELY!

Well GOOD LUCK, i wished i always wanted to try marplan but its so down the road from my doctor prescribing it. Prozac is the vital thing right now, i mean for my life.

How activating is it?

Prozac i know when it works, but is marplan like WOOFSH! ROFL!

Marplan is a 'dirty' drug, which IMO means BETTER drug! Forget the selectivity - SE, NA/NE, DA - MAOIs boost the lot, & at every receptor (I presume). Of course this can mean more side effects, but at least they normally fade away with time, unlike most 'newer' drugs.

Its interesting that you like Prozac - its the least selective of the SSRIs (you probably know that). More like a 'shotgun' than a 'sniper rifle'! I certainly did better on Prozac than all other SSRIs.

How activating is Marplan? Well, I can only say what happened last time because I've only just restarted it. It made me more anxious than I already was (I have SP) but when on my own or in relaxed atmosphere things were quicker & sharper, both mentally & physically. I also had insomnia which I kind of enjoyed (I normally suffer with hypersomnia), though of course its impractical in the long run. Diphenhydramine sorted it out & it was short lived anyway.
No doubt the dopamine plays a large part in its 'activating' properties, via its irriversable MAO-B inhibition.

It also has a STRONG serotonergic effect - you can 'feel' it!

For the non-anxious depressive, or with a benzo (like in my case) it should be an excellent 'get-up-and-go' med. At least thats what I'm hoping!

Dare I say it, I might be feeling its effects already. I went to the dentist today & had both a filling extracted AND a tooth drilled out to make way for a filling. The pain of the drilling was BAD despite the local anesthetic, but all I could do was laugh! And I 'endured' the pain very well. Thats not normally like me. I had a similar 'enhanced tolerability' when I had painfull urine retention whilst on Nardil, for which I had a catheter fitted - I laughed & joked throughout the whole ordeal! Maybe its just placebo. Whatever it is I cant stop typing!!!

I thought the question asked was is Marplan available in the US and I said Yes, because I took it last year or was it early this year...
