Emsam and pain meds.

Posted by Greenmtn on October 16, 2007, at 10:01:50

If anyone has any experience with the following situation I would like your feedback. I have been taking Emsam 6mg which is working well. However intense pain from Crohn's has returned. Without pain meds I cannot work. About 6 months ago I was taking oxycodone 5 to 10 mg a day as needed which took care of the pain.
However I know that many drugs are not for use with MAOI's. Especially Tramadol (which would not work) and Demerol. Of course I will work with my Doc on this but many docs are not used to dealing with MAOI's.
What meds have you used without problems? Is there any documentation I could show to doctor? I'm just afraid he will not help me with pain.

I was allowed hydrocodone when I was on 6mg Emsam.
The 6mg is very forgiving. I had no reactions to anything.

I am on the 9 now and also taking Vyvanse (dexedrine)

This is good news. Now I need to see what my doc says. I may need to educate him. Is the Vyvanse for a SE of Emsam?

No. I have needed and taken some sort of stimulant for years. I tried the Emsam without and it helped with depression very well but I had no energy or motivation. The good news is that on the EMSAM I need only a tiny amount of stimulant compared to before.

I have no real side effects from EMSAM.

Hello Kaye,

I am on the 9mg patch.

I got kicked by my horse today; a very hard direct hit to the middle of my lower lumbar area... ow.

Aspirin and Advil just aren't cutting it. Do you have any thoughts about hydrocodone with the 9mg patch?

You know, I thought it was contraindicated but my Dr. checked on it and said it was ok.

I would call the pharmacist first.

Take Care,
Kaye

Great idea.

Okay, I just called the pharmacist....

Without hesitation (and seemingly without looking it up), she said it was fine.... that there was no interaction problem with EMSAM and hydrocodone.

Thank you for your advice.
