lamictal/self harm

Posted by roxy27 on September 29, 2007, at 20:02:34

I started taking Lamictal, and after a week on 25 mg I had a breakdown at work. I started crying uncontrollably, beat my legs with my fists, and even starting biting the skin on my arms-drawing blood. I woke up the next day crying as well. Is this heard of?

I think you need to tell your doctor about this.
Lamictal may induce agitation and anxiety.
Many psych meds can make you feel worse in the beginning and usually when depression lifts the behavioral inhibition lifts earlier than the lift in mood.

Have you had problems with self harm before you were put on lamictal?

I did when I was a teenager, that was about 10 years ago. Is it worth continuing on with the Lamictal?

Lamictal is a kind of odd med. Lamictal is not entirely a real mood stabilizer. From their own website, "http://lnk.nu/lamictal.com/g3k.html", "LAMICTAL does not take away the initial feelings of depression or mania you may be experiencing. Instead, LAMICTAL can help keep mood episodes, especially depression, from coming back."

You see, Lamictal will help you to delay the time to occurrence of mood episodes. In fact, it will help keeping you well, not getting you well.

If you're not stabilized before the treatment, Lamictal may be rough to begin with. Go slowly. Agitation, anxiety and insomnia are frequent initial side effects of LTG.

Maximus is this just for bipolar? As I tried 50mg last summer and no anxiety took it I think at bedtime. Phillipa

Yeah, thats interesting. The studies couldn't proove that it actually reduced mania or depression only that it kept certain people stable after they had been previously stabilized (?)

Roxy, I think you need to discuss that with your psych. Sometimes lamictal works best in combo with other meds

WOW, I can't believe I just read exactly what I have been wondering since being placed on lamictal. Since being on Lamictal, I have started cutting. At first when I told my pdoc, he increased my dosage from 75 mgs to 200. I was ok for a while, but recently I have began to cut again. Tonight I really did a number on my arms, and I don't know what I'm going to do.. It is so hot in south Florida so when I wear a long sleeved shirt it will be so obvious..
It just crossed my mind today about the connection between lamictal and the cutting. I haven't really researched it yet, but now that another person is experiencing the same thing, I know its not just my crazy brain.
Thanks, and take care.
