Lyrica increases appetite!

Posted by King of Nothing on August 31, 2007, at 10:28:52

I'm on Lyrica for depression and anxiety and i love it...it works great, but boy does it ever increase my appetite! I have to fight the urge to eat all day long. Anyone else experience the same? I'm on high dose, 300 mgs. bid.

King was thinking of you with the remeron too with the thread above as I heard lyrica causes weight gain too. So does that mean double weight gain I have no idea. But I know you can do it. Love Phillipa

May I ask if you take any other meds for anxiety and/or depression (besides Lyrica)?

King, I thought you decided to stay on the lower dose? Yeah, it does cause weight gain and hunger pangs all day long. You can fight it though. Good Luck!

Were you taking any benzos for anxiety before you started Lyrica? Do you take any other meds with the Lyrica?

Dear King, Now that the Lyrica is working so well do you forsee yourself ever tapering off of the Klonopin. Is the Lyrica helping a lot with your anxiety? Is it more anxiolytic or does it just help with depression or both? I have read of some who reduced their benzos once the Lyrica took hold.

I ask because I take 20 mgs of Valium per day and remeron at a low dose for anxiety and would love to reduce the Valium.

King,

That is really encouraging to hear you are doing well enough to consider a Benzo reduction. I forgot to ask how long you have been on the Lyrica and how long did it take you to get to the therapeutic dose of 300mgs b.i.d. My doctor gave me a bottle of 30 50mg samples this week but I have not had the courage to try it yet.

Hi,

I've just started taking it, not under a Doctor's guidance, I ordered it off the internet. I've been taking it for about 3 days at 150mg and so far, the anxiety isn't too bad but I feel very sort of absent minded and a bit dazed, feel a bit sort of drunk infact, disorientated, some flu like symptoms. Still feel very tired and weak at around 8pm at night (which isn't normal)

What symptoms did you experience inititially and how long did it take you to get up to 500mg?

Thanks......Denise

Denise,

I've taken Lyrica and I definitely caution you!! First of all you should be under a doctor's care with this medicine and secondly you shouldn't start at 150mg to start off, that's too high at the beginning. That might be the cause of your symptoms. You should titrate slowly. It could be quite dangerous to do it on your own because you don't know how your body responds to a high/low dosage. Please be careful!!

Hi,

Did 300mg make you feel less anxious but still depressed?

I know I'm impatient but I took 300mg last night and today I felt relaxed, able to concentrate, not so disorientated but eerily low and morose. Nothing new I suppose but just wondered if this is a sign that it wouldn't work at 500mg???

Also, are you taking anything else with it?

Thanks.....Denise

Hi Rina,

Thanks for your concern and warnings. Is lyrica known to be a fatal drug? Just wondering if any other people have had a really bad reaction to it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "A Doctor's Care". I mean does "A Doctor's care" mean putting people on SSRIs (which can make people suicidal) and then telling them to come back again in a month? (which is what usually happens).

Hi Denise,

The concern is just from one babbler to the next. This medicine can be very tricky and effects everyone differently. For instance, Lyrica is an anti-convulsant drug approved for neuropathic pain management and of course other things. Yet, it's also classified as a controlled substance like narcotics.

Things go on with our body all the time that we have symptoms for but don't generally think signify anything of concern but sometimes there may be a need for alarm. Case in point, after lyrica is taken, it's absorbed through the blood so it can move through the body.

Many other medicines are metabolized by the liver but lyrica isn't.The body removes Lyrica through the kidneys, so people with kidney disorders need to be careful. To prevent too much Lyrica from building up in the body, they usually need to take less Lyrica and take it less often.

So say something like a common side effect of dizziness or headache or swelling of the hands or ankles occur. Those symptoms would be shunned because they are common but during each dosage increase and depending on how fast you increase it not that it could be fatal because there hasn't been any reports of that. There are potential bad reactions or unforseen side effects.

That's why I was saying it's best to be under a doctor's care with this medicine because determining what dosage is best is really hard to gauge on our own and yes your right on the other point you made about antidepressants....lol well said denise. Good luck and please be safe

Hi,

Ignore what I just asked you, I just looked to the previous posts and see that you are also on Remeron and Paxil.

Just out of interest have you ever tried adding low dose antipsychotics for your anxiety?

Thanks Rina,

I don't have any kidney problems (that I'm aware of but I'll bear what you have said in mind and reduce the dose tonight. I'm starting Seroxat again so probably best to.

I know I'm being stupid at times (I used to be such a sensible and cautious person) especially when I know Zyprexa helps me but I just keep wondering if Zyprexa ever stopped helping me what else would I take so I sort of experiment a bit whilst I know it's there.

Also, I only managed to order a small supply of Lyrica as it is so expensive and just wanted to get up really quickly to around 500/600 just to see what affect it gave me at 600. God I sound like such a junkie.

Thanks again for the advice again, I will take it on board.

Your not being stupid denise and your not acting like a junkie. You just want what we all want. To feel better and have remission for long rather than shorter periods of time. I didn't mean to sound "preachy or motherly" even though I am a mother...lol I just want the best as I'm sure you would want for me. Good Luck!
