More weight gain Risperdal or Abilify? (Geodon?)

Posted by Fivefires on August 22, 2007, at 12:07:49

I've been to two sites re: Risperdal and Abilify and they contradicted one another.

T suggested Pdoc might not suggest Abilify re: cost or a newer drug.

Geodon was mentioned on one site, afa, less weight gain, but I've heard a couple horror stories re: this one; not just weight gain.

My appt w/ Pdoc is in an hour.

I have a life problem (Well, no. Now there are two!) going on at this time. Wouldn't ya' know! When it rains!

tks any1

i've taken both and had weight gain. risperdal had weight gain and talking/answering myself. abilify had weight gain and depression and withdrawn feelings. good luck with your choice.

Tks rina. You came to my rescue again. Hmmmm.

Think might talk w/ pdoc re: adding in an SNRI W/ Abilify. I feel pretty good about this, so changed the title. Something feels right, but I just can't put it into words.

Re: weight gain, have a question.

I'm not at all hungry.

The weight gain w/ these isn't necessarily caused by appetite stimulation and then over-eating, but instead, by the whole, cortisol level thing, ... right or wrong?

Do you know rina?

Or, can anyone pls answer?

sincerely, 5f

ask your pdoc is maybe you can add metformin to your regimen to combat the possible weight gain, especially if it's happening and you don't even have an appetite.

i would also suggest keeping a mood chart because sometimes abilify can really dampen your mood, make you have very little emotional reactions-less talkative, reserved, inability to do things you could do before, almost complete inactivity. i don't mean to scare you, i just want you to advocate your best treatment for you and stay informed. that's why it's a good idea to keep a journal and a mood chart.

Is Metformin available in the U.S. Rina?

This is how I've been feeling for a few months. It doesn't seem worse. It almost seems better.(?) Maybe because such a low dose (Abilify 2.5mg). I'd better get my 'scale' out and watch.

Oh no. I know you're aren't meaning to scare me; and you aren't scaring me. Instead, I appreciate knowing what to look for and how to proceed w/ this med, especially w/o much access to pdoc.

Got my scale out Rina. Already looks 2 lbs higher than PCP's scale; prob' just diff' scales. Afterwards tho', found myself eating a bit too much before bed! :(

Will keep Metformin in mind. Thought there was a somewhat recent discussion here re: Metformin, but did a 'find' and didn't find it. Maybe on another board.

I was looking at another post above re: Abilify and noticed a post re: Adderall-XR. Would you mind sharing w/ me what this medication is used for? Is it anything like Provigil?

tks, 5f

I actually take AdderallXR for ADD. It's a stimulant. Some people have different experiences with it though. It affects my appetite but doesn't keep me focused or alert. Concentration is what I need during the day, enabling me to stay on task. Some people also use it for narcolepsy. It actually makes me sleepy in a zombie like way, that's why my pdoc is thinking of adding something with it. Hope that helps a bit. About your scale, both reasons could be a factor. Evening eating as well as different scales.

I have always had some symptoms of ADD but no cou*ty docs have dx'd this by way of whatever means it is done.

So, Adderall and Provigil are 'alike' both originally intended for ADD and narcolepsy?

Did it increase or decrease your appetite? I'll assume decreased, unless hear differently from you. U may use babble feature at any time, if u wish, and have time.

Provigil was rough in the beginning for me, but now is helping greatly w/ fatigue. I feel more alert and aware as well.

I'm so sorry but I can't remember if you've been on Provigil :(

I'm at w*r w/ my financial institition and they just fired another round and I've gotta' get offline.

Oh yeah, eating a lot before sleep is so not a good thing.

Jeez rina, to me, you are like an good angel who appeared at a time I needed one really bad. U may know when.(?) I don't even want to go to Admin and see if we already know one another.

all ways, 5f

Hi,

Yes, for a brief time I did use Provigil and it worked for me, then it stopped. Also, got tired of needing pre-authorization from my insurance for it. They only okay this particular med for narcolepsy and not ADD.My doc said it was narcolepsy but it stopped working very quickly but no eating issues with it. Only the Adderall affects my eating. Well I sign on again this evening, gotta board my passengers.... ttyl
