Lithium

Posted by becksFLA on August 13, 2007, at 9:25:29

I don't know if it does anything for me! Please help if you've taken it before. I have questions because I went on it as I was coming off a very high dose of klonopin, which I'm still on, but much lower. The anxiety never changed, so we figured the Lithium was helping my anxiety if nothing else. However I noticed many effects that I did not like. Can people that have used Lithium please tell me any negative effects they found, physical and mental? I heard it is supposed to be an anti-depressant sometimes too, and that is the thing I'm most worried about coming off it.

Thanks

I'm sorry I don't have my own experience but personal relatives have taken it and done very well. Seems a peace comes over them in a few days. They have been alchohol and bipolar. Love Phillipa sorry this is all I have wish it was more.

thanks phillipa....i was also kinda wondering about alcohol and the combination. it seems like even a glass of wine will effect me 10x as much the next day, when before it never did.

What are the effects you are having? And what is your dose? And how long have you been on it? And what tests have you had since being put on it (this last question has to do with a possible effect on your thyroid):

all thyroid and additional blood tests have been fine. I was at 1200 and noticed slight brain fog, huge apetite and the alcohol thing.....one drink would cause a nasty pain in my stomach the next day. I was at 1200, down to 600 now.

I think 900mg is the happy medium-- too high and you get dangerous and nasty side effects (nausea, tremor, foggy head, diziness, unstable walk, gastrointestinal problems, sleepiness, lethargy, etc.). Too low, and you get the effects of your illness, uncovered by a high enough dose (depression, anxiety, skin feels more sensitive, more energy, less sleep, etc.).

About your stomach -- are you taking the caps all at once? I never do that; also the blurb on the bottle says take with food. I rarely drink more than one glass of wine or beer and even that spaced by at least 3 days.

Maybe you can speak to your doc. about a dose adjustment.

Thanks. So far it seems like the lithium really was having a placebo effect. I came way down in my dose of klonopin at the exact same time, hoping this would help with the withdrawal/anxiety...But my anxiety has remained the same (manageable). I guess I'll continue to lower the dose and see what happens. So far though, no negative changes. I'm sure I'm in the same boat as so many people where you've tried so many meds that you really don't know what your official DX is....just a label anyway.

Thanks

I meant that the dose should higher maybe-- 600mg
is really hovering on therapeutic level;

I was tested a few months ago at 1200mg, it was very normal. I really just don't think it's doing anything for me.
