EMSAM and weight gain? Anecdotal answers?

Posted by Racer on August 11, 2007, at 2:02:37

So, uh, for those of you who've used EMSAM, what would you say regarding its effect on weight? And did you gain or lose weight on other medications?

Any and all info cheerfully considered...

(By the way, yes, I've read the premarketing studies -- I'm curious about what real people are finding with it.)

With its stimulative nature i wouldent think so,howevever the escalation of doseage would put it there with the others as well, hmmmm,

Are you noticing weight gain without appetite increase, thats a sure sign of med weight, also dont forget anxiety alone can lay a nice chunk on you,has for me,i lift and do cardio all day long and still being in close to 250 and i literaly have to have food shoved down my mouth as i am so ramped up i dont even care to eat.

I've both gained and lost weight on EMSAM. If you allow its carb craving tendencies to rule, then you'll certainly gain. Otherwise it does seem to increase metabolism and ease weight loss. But I can't overstate the effect it has had on sweet cravings for me, but when I make the effort to fight that, I do lose weight. So I usually go in cycles now days, spending 6 weeks totally abstaining from anything sweet to get back down to 130 then the next 3 or 4 weeks giving in (with some moderation) to the cravings and gaining back up to 145 or 150, so for me it has definitely increased weight fluctuation. I should also note that I had almost no experience with sweet cravings prior to EMSAM so it may be considerably worse for someone who naturally has those tendencies. EMSAM turns dark chocolate (something I never even liked before) into crack so never ever ever ever try it.

Dopamine really? What do you mean it revs you up as I am still considering EMSAM and yes I know it's been over a year but I'm trying to figure out how to get the money as medicaire supplemental doesn't cover it. And I eat dark chocolate truffles nightly like l0.

And Racer I will e-mail Robert David and see if it put weight on him. I'm sure it didn't he really loved the med. Love Phillipa

The answer is going to vary from person to person. It all depends on how you reply to your body when it says "give me sweets!!!". If you reply "OK, would we like a chocolate bar or a big bag of M&Ms" or if you reply "shut up, we don't eat sweets".

Reply to your cravings consistently the first way and yes, you will gain weight and it will have been indirectly because of EMSAM. Answer the second way and you'll likely even lose some weight from where you were when you started EMSAM.

I can tell you this, it makes me crave sweets like I've NEVER craved them before (don't forget that I am on the biggest patch) and I suspect it has a similar action on most other users.

10 chocolate truffles! No wonder you're not taking taking EMSAM... who needs EMSAM when you've got chocolate truffles? ;-)

I can just look at food and gain weight. I gained 20 lbs my first month on Nardil.

EMSAM has been great in this regard. I've been on it almost 2 months and haven't had any weight gain - or cravings, for that matter. In fact, I'd say my appetite is more stable than usual.

I've been working to lose weight since last November and am down over 40 lbs since then. I hit a wall when my depression intensified around April (when I was still taking Wellbutrin) and gained some weight back. About the time I started EMSAM, I also started with a new therapist. With help of the two, I've ramped up my walking regimen to include weight training 3 times a week, and more intensive cardio. As a result, I've started losing weight again. The numbers haven't moved down more than a few pounds because I've been putting on muscle, but I've lost just about one notch on my belt in the last few weeks. Its easy to stick to healthy food choices in appropriate portions.

I never allow myself to be hungry. I do, however, generally avoid all sugar as that is inevitably a slippery slope. Especially crack chocolate.

Not being a size queen, I have not jumped right up to the biggest patch. (You know what they say - Its not the size of the patch, its how you stick it). I can only report my experience with the 6mg version.

Y

With the insomnia, I'm awake earlier. So there's a longer gap between breakfast and lunch. And, yes, most days there does seem to be time for an extra snack.

Racer, I've lost weight since stepping up Emsam to the 9mg patch, and it's weight I can afford to lose. My diagnosis includes eating disorder NOS (basically, binge eating without purging) and as long as I follow a reasonable food plan while on Emsam, my eating disorder is about 75% in remission. It's remarkable relief.

As always, I feel the need to follow up by noting that everyone's individual mileage will vary, though I know you know this. Emsam has been working well for me, but I've experienced a few issues in the last several weeks and am tending towards hypomania. Will be adding Lamictal as stabilizer in the next few weeks with a standard titration schedule up to 100mg/day; if that negatively impacts the eating, I'll plan to let you know.
