Risperdal for Depression? May start next week

Posted by AdamCanada on July 17, 2007, at 18:17:32

I am going to stop my remeron 30mg which i have been taking for about 3 weeks with my Paxil 10mg and ativan 0.5mg (ativan 2-3 times daily.

I have strong unipolar atypical depression and social anxiety. The SA has been helped a lot with paxil and ativan but I still feel extremely anti-social with little to say to anyone. When I take ritalin I am a lot more social and am able to actually enjoy life for a limited period of time. Ritalin is not a long term solution though and I take it as needed for any social situations.

My symptoms for the depression include lack of enjoyment in anything, low drive, low interests, low sex drive, lack of emotions, and i generally feel like a zombie which perhaps is from the paxil.

Paxil though has made me livable. Before each day would be mentally unbearably painful and my head would feel like it's on fire.

So stopping the paxil which I have tried before has resulted in something far more fierce than just depression. I would be literally in constant mental pain and hell.

So.... With 15 or more medications that have failed, made me worse, or only slightly better I am willing to try risperdal (anti-psychotic) again.

Previosuly I have tried it on it's own with some success of getting rid of the constant pain and given me some interest in daily activities but it wasn't enough by itself.

Perhaps with paxil it will work well? Who knows. I am so sick of feeling so worthless that I'm actually returning to this sedative crap (i need something activating but i dont have a lot of options). Amazing. Whatever. At least I got my stupid ritalin to give me some good days when I need it.

Can anyone share their positive experiences of Risperdal for depression lack of interests etc.

I would personally say this may not be a good idea, but if you have been on it before you would know best.

Antipsychotics, for me, induced all of these symtpoms and/or made existing such symptoms worse.

You tried wellbutrin augmentation? What about nortryptaline? You may even do a switch to clomipramine. It is a TCA with different side effects but is a effective antidepressnat. Probably only one notch less than nardil.

Anafranil and amitryptaline are considered the gold standard for antidepressants.

Imipramine is often used as a reference, but amitryptaline usually outperforms imipramime back to back.

Clomipramine is considered by many one of the best antidepressants. It was probably the only drug that got me well enough to discontinue.

It is compared to SSRI's, but it got to the core of my bad mood much better.

Side effects are similar to SSRI's, but I found them much more tollerable on account of it working better.

TCA's get a bad rap on account of the push to prescribe newer drugs, but many studies actually find the older drugs more effective for certain types of depression.

SLS, if you remember him, has tried many of the newer drugs, but still finds relief with nortryptaline.

Nardil is also a drug to try should others fail.
