More than one antipsychotic?

Posted by Angela2 on July 13, 2007, at 19:19:25

Is there anyone who takes more than one antipsychotic? I take abilify and zyprexa along with lexapro. When I was in the hospital they put me on 2 for somereason. I guess to make things work faster. Anyone else?

Sometimes, if a person is considered "treatment resistant," 2 antipsychotics are used. Other times, the combinations aren't that rational. I think you should talk to your prescriber about why you're on 2 antipsychotics, and ask what the benefits are, what the risks are, and if its possible for you to be put on only one antipsychotic. If your doc isn't helpful, you may want to seek out another one. Like I said, using 2 or more antipsychotics is sometimes helpful, but for the vast majority of people, its probably a good idea to take 1 antipsychotic only.

Oftentimes meds like tegretol are used as adjunctives to AP's. They can augment the antipsychotic effect and the side effects may be tollerable.

They are often especially usefull if you have a family history of bipolar, or have a mood disorder in addition to schizophrenia.
