How to get Rid of BRAIN ZAPS from SSRI's

Posted by garyrn on July 13, 2007, at 15:02:30

Does anyone know how to get rid of these terrible debilitating Brain Zaps. Just came off Lexapro and 7 Days clean. The brain zaps are horrible. I've read about Benedryl and Omega 3 to help with this, but not much out there. If anyone know how to treat these ZAPS, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance....

Gary

Got them coming off a low dose of paxil and added back in small pieces and worked down from that . Love Phillipa

When I went off paxil I switched to prozac and the brain zaps were gone. Can your doctor give you some prozac?

Yes, you can experiment with benydryl. Some people find help with choline suplements (choline bitrate). Sometimes too much choline can cause depression. I never had this side effect, infact, I found it relaxing.

Yes, Benadryl has helped me come off of Effexor XR 2 weeks ago - cold turkey. Effexor has a short 1/2-life, unlike Prozac, thus I have read that Prozac helps bridge side-effects during withdrawal.

I am dealing with the braun zaps for now without Prozac.

Gary, antihistamines like benadryl and a sedating one called Vistaril in the U.S. (available by prescription) along with benzodiazapines, helped quite a lot.

In my own case, it was also useful to cultivate an attitude of patience and acceptance to the extent I was able, as I'd been on a very high dose of Effexor for a very long time and my taper was rapid. The zaps are nasty, uncomfortable and unsettling, especially for those of us prone to anxiety. Reminding myself that it was a normal part of the process of withdrawal took away a lot of the discomfort about my discomfort.

Best wishes for a rapid passage through the zap phase.

I wish I had known about the prozac taper but if it's already been a week you're almost there. Benadryl did help me a little but as I said before the worst of it should almost be over. Just hang in there. Most of us totally understand what you are going through.
