Emsam and other over counter meds..

Posted by Seeking Peace on June 18, 2007, at 21:23:01

Sorry to post again...just that it's all so confusing.

Are there any meds (in u.s., am not familiar with other names) for cough/cold one can take while on Emsam? Or are you doomed and have to just tolerate the cold/cough etc if you get one?

Are there any meds for allergies that one can take? I'm planning on traveling overseas in a couple of days and I'm afraid I may have allergies there. So wanted to stock up on necessary meds as I don't know if docs there would know much about emsam esp since even here people seem confused. I saw Benadryl quick disolve strips didn't say anything for maoi etc but when i asked pharmacist, they weren't sure and told me to just avoid to be safe. I'm not sure they knew either.

What about pain/fever meds like tylenol/motrin/exedrin tension headaches?

What about vitamins and calcium pills?

What about motion sickness pills like dramanine??

Having never been on a maoi before, it's all confusing and like such a hassle. I'll ask my pdoc too next time but what do you all think/have experienced? Please let me know.

thanks.

Oh boy I hope an EMSAM user sees this post . I know you can google on bob's site for cold meds but the others I don't recall being discussed. Love Phillipa

You can take the active ingredient in original benadryl--dipenhydramine. It's safe with MAOis. But check to make sure that there isn't anything else besides tylenol. Too many 'Benadryl' formulations contain other ingredients, these days. So for colds, dipenhydramine and acetominophen are fine. Also doxylamine, which is similar to dipenhydramine/benadryl, but not very common.

So for allergies, dipenhydramine is good again. It will likely make you drowsy, though. I don't know for certain whether claritin and allegra are fine with MAOis, but I'd think they would be. Dramamine is also an antihistamine, like all those, and it should be fine.

Ibuprofen is also, as far as I know, fine, but I haven't actually checked on it, I'm afraid. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be. Same with Naproxen. I've taken Naproxen, Ibuprofen, and tylenol and never had any problems.

As far as I know, vitamin pills are fine as long as they don't have any yeast-sourced products in them. I take a regular multivitamin with my MAOi every day.

Particular cold med ingredients NOT to take (just those off the top of my head):

Dextromethorphan hybromide
Pseudoephedrine
Phenylphrine

Ephedrine (rare ingredient)

Avoid all those--they are the dangerous ones I can remember.

Hope the MAOi works out!
