Social Anxiety ruining my life. What can help?

Posted by AdamCanada on June 10, 2007, at 18:32:36

I am currently on paxil 10mg (any more and it puts me to sleep), and xanax low dose 4 times a day.

I also have severe depression, low drive, low motivation, very anti-social.

I been on over 20 different meds mostly for the depression which was caused by accutane years ago. Prior to that the only problem I've had is severe social anxiety.

The social anxiety has been helped a lot with the paxil but still not enough.

What else can help? Often times I have given up on getting better on the depression/motivation/drive side of things so i'm going to try and see what can make me more uninhibited and more SOCIAL.

I am so sick and tired of not being able to meet people and even fearing simple phone calls.

I need to get out there and meet people but it's so damn hard with this social anxiety constantly on.

Back when I was on Paxil + Ativan it was a bit better and I got to meet some people but these years I hardly ever meet anyone new. I just dont have the guts and inhibition to meet people.

So what on earth is out there that can make me more social? If it wasn't for the paxil I would be a constant wreck so i know meds can help.

Im seeing my doc later this month and I'll be trying some new meds. Probably something for both depression and social anxiety. But I dont know what would be good for both. Remeron is one I been considering.

Any suggestions? Heck even if a med is just for social anxiety and not for depression i'll try it. I just need some options.

Have you ever tried Nardil? It's usually one of the most effective drugs for these problems. Sometimes a stimulant can be added to it to help with drive and motivation.

but i couldnt handle the weight loss and it lost it's effect over time.

i actually wanted to meet up with old friends and went to a party, actually talked to people, i never would have done that without the ritalin.

Dexedrine on the other hand didn't provide a similar effect. it just seemed to have a high feeling or something and gave me black eyes.

No I don't believe the paxil and an MAOI can be taken together. But I'm not an expert on that so I defer to someone with more experience. Do the benzos help? Love Phillipa

You seem to cope with stimulatory ADs.

Weren't you on that drug no one had heard of.
Was it an NRI?
(Not Vyvanse or something like that?
Did wonders for your libido didn't it?)

Could you take Ritalin periodically?

Paxil is completely contraindicated with MAOIs so you would have to stop it before switching. You would probably find it was worthwhile. Klonopin can be good for social anxiety, I took it for five years. There probably isn't a great deal of difference between benzos at equivalent doses once you're stabilized. Klonopin tends to cause depression more often than other benzos.

Definitely not to be mixed. The result could be serotonin syndrome which I think can be fatal

Quintal well we finally agree on a benzo as klonopin after taking a few days I felt suicidal but wasn't so switched back by the pdoc immediately to xanax and fine right away. Why is this do you think that klonopin seems to depress a lot of others too? Love Phillipa

Beta-blockers (ie propanolol, atenolol and many others) have sometimes been used to treat social phobia on specific occasions--social gatherings, public speaking, and the like. No idea how widespread that practice is, but you might suggest it to your doc.

It was when I was on paxil + ativan when I was most social over a long period of time. I actually met some people and was able to talk on the phone with people without extreme anxiety but in the end something went wrong my dep went sooo downhill. it may have been a different factor but i stopped the ativan and i was better within a week. maybe my paxil pills were expired who knows?

I will try ativan again though that is for sure I will put it on my list of options.

Xanax has worked for my social anxiety very little, and i think i tried buspar i dont think that did much. dont remember much about it.

Yes now I remember I was on Vivarint the NRI or whatever it is. Huge sex drive and I seemed to be able to talk to people too.

BUT the FDA banned it from the USA and it's been taken off the market because one bad batch of the med occured a while ago or some stupid reason.

I can only get it in france now.

It trully was a miracle drug in various ways but i dont recall how it did for my depression (if it did much at all for that) because i may not have been on paxil then.

It may have been a perfect augmentation for paxil. but hey the FDA screws me over while allowing poison like Accutane which kills thousands of people a year on the market.

Adam,

I have the exact same symptoms as you to a tee. Once I started on Geodon (180 mg at bedtime) with prozac 40 mg, it seems to help my anxiety quite a bit and depression too. The geodon works as a mood stabilizer and helps take away some of my tiredness and helps with the anxiety too. I take Klonopin as needed for bad anxiety, like before a class or an interview. I'm surprised at how well the geodon is helping me. It's something to consider. Sometimes mood stabilizers can make a huge difference. I'd at least give it a shot. Good luck!! So far no bad side effects either.

Adam,

I forgot to mention. I also take very low dose (5 mg) adderall as needed if I'm really tired or need energy it helps my mood too.

Buspar is one of the most useless meds on the market. Sure a few people like it but for most its a waste of money.

Then again it doesnt have many SE and is pretty harmless except to your wallet :-D
