Who's Who

Posted by Squiggles on May 30, 2007, at 12:43:20

Are therapists Scientologists?

Can someone give me a list of medical
categories in the psychiatric health
professions, and their positions, degrees,
medical affiliations, etc.

Thank you.

I'm sure some are. Just as some therapists are Buddhists, Christians, atheists, vegetarians, sports fans, artists, or lovers of chocolate....just to name a few variations.....i.e., therapists are bound to come from *all* walks of life with all sorts of predispositins, likes, personal beliefs, religions (or not) and so forth.

If I may ask...why do you ask? Why would [all?] therapists be Scientologists?

From the UK:

http://www.allaboutpsychotherapy.com/glossary.asp?CategoryID=1

From the U.S. -

http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/go/help/finding-help/find-treatment/types-of-mental-health-professionals

or.......(specific to California, but still good descriptions)

http://psychologydoc.com/Therapists%20.htm

I'm sure there are more out there. Educational requirements and later qualifications are going to vary country to country, and also by state within the U.S.

Hope this helps some.

Thank you.

Why do i ask... i was made fun of for being
manic-depressive at one time in my life and
someone tried to poo poo my medical condition
and make me see a counsellor. I'm glad i didn't.
I feel sorry for that person who did not take
the medical route and wasted her life on
conversations which could not reverse her
biologically=based illness.

But a cousellor or therapist can help you deal with the issues that come with the diagnosis they just don't prescribe meds . Many people see both. Me included. Love Phillipa

As long as they don't try to replace
medical treatment with Freudian ego/id and
other metaphysical entities - analysis, it's
ok with me. Otherwise there should be some
control over vulture medicine by the College
of Physicians and Psychiatrists.

No offense to present company and those who
try to direct people out of trouble, including
seeing a physician for the right medication, as you are doing.

Personally I love my therapist. I see both as well. I have been to a couple horrible ones, but if you find one that you really connect with almost as a friend, it can be amazing....She is basically my friend I go talk to and vent and she knows EXACTLY the right things to say to help me out...I always walk out of those appointments feeling 10x better. She's also great about emailing back and forth throughout the week and responding to voicemails as well. It's all personal preference I suppose.

I have a therapist and pdoc, and they happen to be friends. It works out well for me, because my T listens to me and helps me talk about my issues that are not med related, and then my pdoc reads his notes and it helps him to help me. It's pretty cool. Sometimes it can work out really well.

I wouldn't completely discount Ts, since when they are any good, they can be great. No one even tries to suggest that I don't take meds and only go to counseling. But granted, there are some horrible therapists. I've been to a few. One wasted a whole session teaching me breathing techniques that actually aggrevated my anxiety. I'm a musician, I know how to breathe! And then there's the ones who just sit there. I'm not even sure they are listening. Ugh.

I am Bipolar. I too have a PDOC and a therapist who are friends and find they both balance each other well. With my PDOC we talk meds and always returns my page if there is a crisis during med tweaking ect. With my psychologist we explore emotional wellness. She uses a great deal of 'here & now' approaches as opposed to digging deep into the past (which I've done with many a therapist which has helped to some degree I suppose for general enlightenment) in order to help me move forward in the moment instead of staying stuck in my fear and anxiety. She quite present via email and telephone as well which is fantastic.

....

I recall reading somewhere that Dr. Kay Jamison
said that she could not possibly go through bipolar disorder without the assistance of both medications and a therapist [words to that effect]... so you're in good, professional company on this opinion.
