Energizing ADs??

Posted by Helen A. Boggie on May 26, 2007, at 0:21:17

Hi

My Dr switched me to prozac from celexa when I first moved back to CA. At first I felt really well and energized and could control my appetite with ease. The Dr. upped the prozac and at the same time the celexa was washing out of my system I assume. Now I am SOOOOOOOOO tired, all I want to do is eat, sleep and watch TV. The Dr. lowered my dose of prozac but I have been so desperate and depressed at the turn of things, that I started taking celexa with the prozac, thinking that that was the comination which was helping me feel so good. But I am still tired and lethargic and discouraged because I have changed my medication so much I don't know which combination is doing what. I just want to go back to feeling normal, happy and energetic.

Any suggestions?

Anybody know a good pdoc in San Diego?
Please help. thanks

Try augmenting with an amphetamine or provigil.

Prozac is known for having an initial energizing effect, like feeling a bit wired for some people.

You should make sure your doctor knows you are taking two serotonergic drugs, becauase serotonin overdose ("serotonin syndrome") can be very dangerous.

Regarding serotonin syndrome, read Football's story below.

You shouldn't take both SSRIs at the same time. Prozac just may not be right for you. I've tried most of the SSRIs, but my Dx is BP2, so Prozac was horrible for me and extremely energizing to the point of mania. Zoloft was energizing but significantly less than Prozac. Lexapro and Celexa were not engerzing, and Paxil was slightly calming. I took all of these before being re-evaluated with the Dx of GAD with panic. It'd be hard for someone to tell you the exact SSRI that's going to be energizing for you. On the other hand, maybe just giving Prozac some time would help. But stop taking the Celexa, that's just going to contribute to the problem.

Hang in there. I know what it's like to be lethargic for no reason. It's not fun. But you'll get through it.

Prozac is very energizing when it first came out by day three gave it up as I thought my panic would never go away and I hadn't had any panic in years. Love Phillipa

Don't take those two together

Serotonin syndrome is a real danger. Let your pdoc know that this isn't working AND that you've been taking both together.

As for what's happening, it can be that you're one of those people who gets serotinergic apathy. I get it -- SSRIs, no matter how energizing, knock me out. I just kinda sit in one spot, staring at the wall, and thinking "someday I'll have to get up out of this chair..." You may be having a similar experience. In that case, lower doses, and augmenting with a more energizing drug may help.

Zoloft is also a more energizing SSRI, though, and it's certainly worth a try.

Good luck.
