Reminder about site guidelines -- please read

Posted by Racer on May 5, 2007, at 19:18:21

Hi, Everyone.

This is a general reminder, which I hope includes some clarification about what is and is not allowed here. It is not meant to single anyone out, and I am opting for lenient enforcement towards those who have broken the rules lately, since it's likely they did so out of ignorance.
If you have a problem with anything posted on this board, something you feel does not belong on the Meds board, or that you feel is uncivil in some way, please do not attempt to address it here on the boards. Use the "Notify administrators" button on the bottom of each page, per site guidelines. The idea here is not to post anything which could lead others to feel accused or put down, and that includes criticism of what they've posted here. If what they have posted violates site guidelines, one of the administrators will address the issue. If a post belongs on another board, one of the administrators will redirect it.

This does not mean that you can't disagree with someone else here. Disagreement, provided it is civil, is certainly allowed -- it's often what leads to some very educational threads. What's not allowed is to say that a post is inappropriate for any reason -- that is the job of the administrators.

Generalizations are also not allowed. Saying "No medications work" is not allowed. Saying, "no medication has worked for me" is allowed. Please keep this in mind. It also applies to posts citing studies showing that no medication works better than placebo. That sort of generalization is not helpful, and may lead to other posters -- including those who have responded to medications -- feeling accused, put down, and invalidated. Additionally, because many people who read this board are in a vulnerable condition, saying that medications do not work may be counterproductive for them, at best. Therefore, please limit your comments regarding drugs to your own experience and clearly identify any opinions as such.

If you are in doubt about how to express an opinion without violating the site guidelines, using "I statements" is often a good idea.

Thank you very much for your time and attention in reading this post.

I didn't realize anybody had said that no medication is better than placebo.

All generalisations?

Or some generalisations?

Thank you also for posting that. We must remember not to discourage those in anyway against taking AD's who are new to this site and seeking help for support and medication advice. Antidepressant continue to be one of the top 5 most prescribed medications. If they didn't work so well for a majority of the people, then why are people still taking them after all these years?? Unfortunately, my great-grandmother never had the opportunity to benefit from medication because there were no meds to treat mental disorders back then. She suffered and died in a mental institution when she was in her early 30's and left 3 children behind.

Yes, Racer, thank you. And I completely agree with the rule about generalisations.

I don't know why? The "Emperor's" New clothing line sure had a good long run.

Sometimes I feel this board is like a bad religion. Make a comment against the God, and you're thrown out.

Oh well, I am taking a break for a while. This will be my last post for a few weeks.

Some people seem to only see what they want to see, (myself included.)

Hey Linkadge,

I just wanted to let you know I value your posts. I may have different opinions from yours on some things , but you are always constructive and respectful and never antagonistic.

I must say I do really agree with the no generalisations rule though- maybe you'll completely diagree with me, but I think it makes sense when you think that the idea behind this forum is to provide support and encouragement for people, not to make them feel like they have no options. Maybe it'll be easier to accept if you look at it from that perspective?

Anyway, I hope you don't stop posting. I for one appreciate your input into my threads

Yes, I too appreciate Link's input and knowledge. Let's just agree to disagree on some things Link. No hard feelings OK? I know you are frustrated with your situation and what happened to your mother. I hope you will come back soon.
