Hi, I'm going to be starting Nardil soon. I have a few questions for people who have experience with MAOIs:
I've read that the diet restrictions have changed and have become less strict than they used to.
Could anyone tell me if these foods are allowed:
Spinach
Nuts
Avocados
One alcoholic drink once in a while.
I'm vegan, so I get most of my protein from nuts and I eat a daily salad containing spinach and avocados. I was shocked when I read a list that had those foods as prohibited. But I'm not sure if it's an old list or the updated one.Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Just stay away from aged cheeses, soy sauce and yummy banana peels.
If the truth be told, people taking Parnate are usually more sensitive to the MAOI diet than those on Nardil. Why? Because Nardil usually gives you low BP.

I've found those foods to be OK. Just take it gently and find out for yourself. Apparently over-ripe avocados are bad but I eat normally ripe ones and they seem to be fine. Apparently the alcohol to avoid is chianti. Nice stuff but I can live without it. I had a reaction from some horrible dried Chinese chicken noodles my son bought. I don't know what was the culprit. All those additives perhaps, but perhaps soy, although I've eaten in Chinese restaurants without problems

What kind of reactions have you had? Just a bad headache, or have you actually landed in hospital? I'm starting parnate and a bit worried about the food thing, the information is so contradictory and I really don't want to follow the tightest restrictions- I want to be able to drink alcohol, and to go out for meals without having to ask for a list of ingredients every single time... But worried about getting too slack and having a reaction and having the doctor stop prescribing it! I suppose the thing is to tread with caution...

When I took Parnate, my pdoc warned me about only a few foods. The ones I recall are
1. soy sauce, or other fermented soy products
2. cheeses, except for some processed cheeses, and cottage cheese
3. sauerkraut, pickles
4. prepared salads such as egg salad, potato salad, particularly if bought after having been left out (or being left out after having been bought)
5. a few types of red wine, mostly of an Italian vintage-- but worth avoiding red wine IMO
6. anything else that is fermented, or foods that spoil-- but again-- if you put them overnight into refrigerator, etc, it's fine to ear thamCategory 6 sounds vague and scary-- but I never had any problem-- most people don't eat spoiled food, so it's not as if you have to cut out things you're eating-- although if leftovers have been standing out in the hot sun, or overnight, I wouldn't eat them, out of caution.
He emphasized that many of the other warnings aren't reliable, and are overstated. If I think of anythign else, I'll add it--

Thanks Honore, that's really helpful. You hit just the right point, the whole 'foods that aren't fresh' thing is making me nervous- I mean, how can you know? I read somewhere taht yogurt was ok if freshly made. Uhm... how can you know? Anyway, I'm sure it's much easier than it sounds once you get used to it. I just hope it works- I've been wanting to try a MAOI for so long that a part of me doesn't want to go ahead in case it doesn't work, isn't that stupid? Like I want to keep that hope alive... I suppose I'm worried I'll completely give up if this doesn't work either.

Those noodles just gave me a tight wheezy chest. Maybe unrelated. No serious reactions from anything yet. I've found all forms of alcohol OK, but in moderation as usual. Not chianti though. I can eat Edam cheese as well. Remember this is me, you may be different
