lamictal as AD

Posted by LlurpsieNoodle on April 18, 2007, at 16:09:12

pdoc has started me on lamictal to help with depressive symptoms. Has anyone else had success with lamictal as AD. We decided to accelerate my taper since my skin remains pristine as usual.

and the other drugs I take have changed somewhat but I'm stabilized on them. Just no antidepressant at the moment and I'm hoping that this will help.

thanks,
-Ll

Lurps, do you have (a lot of) mood instability?

yes I do currently. I just posted a LOooooooOONg list of grievances on the psychology board.

I'm stable in my instability though.

zap zap goes my brain. wtf is that? a tension headache? methinks NOT. (sorry that was directed at my pdoc, not kind Declan)

For me, Lamictal has helped to stable my moods, has helped with my anxiety, and has enhanced the anti-depressant qualities of my Lexapro.

I was skeptical at first about Lamictal, but I am thrilled with it now. I have been on it since February I think.. Maybe January? I love the drug.
Good luck.

Tried it twice got from 25mg to 50mg and excessive salivation spitting in a cup every 30seconds an unusual side effect the pdoc and pharmacist said so I had to stop it. It was in combo with luvox for depression and valium for anxiety. Didn't have other side effects. Love Phillipa

It did not help me, alone or in combo with other AD's, and caused me quite a bit of balance problems as I went up to 200 and back down to 50. I eventually stopped due to falling and memory difficulties...Stargazer

This drug turned my life around! On 200mg. Lamictal and Lithium are the only mood stabilizers that have an AD effect.

That could be because of T though. And placebo effect of seeing pdoc.

Do you guys believe in the placebo effect of seeing a pdoc? I find that after I whine about some symptom I'm having, well, it kind of goes away after an appointment, even if no med change was made. Even if no "therapeutic" insight was offered.

For instance. the 6 week long headache I've been having. He said it was probably a tension headache and that I should try (insert various lame pdoc suggestions to relax). and I rolled my eyes and said sure Dr. Pdoc.

But today the headache feels a lot better. not gone, but better.

same thing with depression and lamictal?

Yes usually for about 24 hours seriously. But then how high is your dose some do well on very low doses. Wouldn't it be great if that's the case? Love Phillipa

Right now I'm on 50mg. that's 2 of the little pills. then I go up in a few days.

pdoc decided to accelerate my taper because i was doing so poorly.

I think the therapeutic dose we're aiming for is 150mg.

Since I've got your attention phillipa, I just wanted to say that I have no hard feelings about what happened. Very recently, like about 2 hours ago, I just learned to accept it. and forgiveness is on its way. I will be more careful in the future, and I hope we can put this behind us?

thanks and you can babblemail me if you want to. that's okay.

Sorry I was such a bitch. I felt really really scared about what happened. I started catastrophizing and thinking of the worst case scenario. I guess you know what I'm sensitive to.

best to you,
-Ll

I haven't had that. I think I've had some amount of placebo effect from starting a new med, but I just give stuff time to determine if the medication is actually working. It'd be cool if I could feel better just by seeing a pdoc.

I think it was a Lamictal start-up-dosage-increase headache, and that it got better as your body has adjusted to the medication. I'm glad it's working for you!!
Placebos are my all-time favourite medications: no side effects :P

-- I do believe in the placebo effect of seeing a pdoc and a t. I tend to feel better after an appointment with either one. Perhaps it has to do with having an opportunity to get things out in the open instead of keeping them bottled up. Kind of a cathartic experience - a release of sorts. All that to say that I know what you mean and have experienced it as well.

I would be interested in continuing to hear how you do on the Lamictal. My pdoc has agreed to let me try it to augment my AD, but I am a bit nervous to start it. He told me to wait a few more days before starting because I am just getting over a really, really bad gastro and am still not able to stomach too much solid food. Anyway, I have read quite a few positive reports about its AD effects here, on Crazymeds and on Remedyfind, so my fingers are crossed for both of us.

Would you mind telling me what dose you started at and any side effects you have experienced?

Thanks, Lurpsie. I hope things just continue getting better for you and that the Lamictal proves to be your silver bullet.

Take care.

no problem
25 mg once daily for 10 days
50 mg once daily for 7 days (I'm in the middle of that)
100mg once daily for 7 days
150mg once daily for 7 days.... then reassess

side effects?

I'm sleeping better almost immediately.

perhaps diminished appetite (not a bad thing given that I'm carrying around seroquel blubber and bridesmaid season is coming up...)

headache, possibly, but that was going on since I quit cymbalta altogether about 4 weeks ago. now it's starting to get better

increased forgiveness

thirstiness/dry mouth

blurry vision when my dose increases, then it gets better. perhaps even some slight double vision one day.

my nailpolish is chipping faster than usual. that's about it.

sleeping better
eating better
have more hedonia ;)
not as many dark thoughts
no self-destructive actions in several days (despite the fact that I've had opportunities)
getting more work done
better concentration
fewer sobbing episodes
taking better care of myself
don't feel so scared of myself anymore

definitely liking the lamictal.

for the record.

geodon 240
lamictal 50 (tomorrow I go up to 100)
provigil200
klonopin 1mg split

Psychologically still feeling better. Today I took 150 mg for the very first time. There's been plenty of boat rocking on the psychological front, but not too much water has been taken on. I might be a little more tired than usual, but I've been under extreme stress. possibly the most ever in my life.

likin the lamictal.
