EMSAM patch falling off- location?

Posted by Donna Louise on May 4, 2006, at 7:57:50

High fellow patchers,
I have stuck this thing on my chest and upper arm and it starts trying to fall off by midday and I have to wrap myself in bandages and ace bandages trying to keep it on my skin. It does stick good for the full 24 to my upper thigh. I want to just keep alternating my two thighs, I guess we are the ones who will find out if this is going to be ok. I wonder if the suggestions for where to place it are just the places it is assumed it will stay on better and it is ok to find our own good spots and use those areas. I am going with that for now. Maybe what will work best will depend on whether someone is a man or woman. The distribution of fat, muscle, skin elasticity, type of clothing, ie, bra, will be the determining factors.

How long have you been on it? How does it make you feel?

I haven't used an Ensam patch, but I've had the same problem with a nicotine patch. My best results (for it staying on) was just behind the top of my shoulder/above my scapula. Clothing seems to move around less in that area. However I had to alternate shoulders to help keep the nicotine from irritating my skin (no rash though.)

I don't think it really matters where you put it as long as you find a place where it will stay attached. I think the suggestions by the drug co are just where they think it will be least likely to rub off. I don't see why you can't try new places till you find the one that sticks the best.

I am having luck putting it on my shoulders/back and upper arms. I'd just keep trying new spots and be sure to give it a few good slaps when you put it on. Also, make sure your skin is dry and oil free. If your thighs work, switch back and forth each day and vary the location slightly so your not putting it on the exact same spot every other day. Perhaps try your lower back.

How are you feeling/doing since starting? Good luck! Rob

> How long have you been on it? How does it make you feel?

Let's see.. I started Sunday so I have been using it 5 days. Because I am still having effexor withdrawal, the picture is not entirely clear but I can say this. I haven't felt this good in a long long time, maybe in part to EMSAM and in part to losing this kind of depression that long term use of sri's seems to have induced. I am sleeping alot less which is a good thing since I had been hypersomnulant but the time I do sleep, I sleep well. I actually want to leave the house and am looking forward to doing things instead of dreading them. I really want to pick up my exercise regimen again but still feel kinda physically sick from withdrawal. I can say this too, if the patch gets yanked from the market, I will take an oral MAOI, no more sri's. I am not having the apathy, amotiviation, anhedonia I was having before. I have excitement and enthusiasm, forgot what that felt like. So yes, so far it seems to be working really well.

Thanks to all otherz regarding patch site

Donna

I just started the patch tonight. I have an awful headache and feeling panicky, however I don't know if this is due to the patch. I bought some tape at the drug store b/c I was on the nicoderm patch and it always fell off. Does anyone know if its okay to use this tape with the patch? Thanks!

I heard they stay on very well even in a shower and that the shoulder is a good place for the patch. Good luck Love Phillipa

Youve got to put on WITHOUT touching sticky side » jinxie

It takes a few days of practice.

Dont ever touch the sticky side. Unpeel it from the side, put that part of the exposed patch on your skin, then work off the other side of the plastic covering from the back side.

There were days, even after using it for two months, that the patch still fell off. And yes, I would try putting it back on with a band-aid on each side. Never really worked. Sometimes I just let it go and didnt put one on until next day. If it happened in first few hours, then I would put on a new patch.

But if you put it on correctly, which means never ever never touch the sticky side with your fingers, that patch will stay on your body through showers, swimming in the pool, diving off short cliffs into the ocean, whatever.

Good luck, and if you have any more q's, e me.

Thank you all for your help!!! Another issue/question: I tan occasionally and I'm worried that the 10 minutes in the booth might be bad. Also I sweat-ALOT-and afraid it will just fall off--has anyone had this problem--or do you have a remedy? Thanks!

You are not supposed to expose the Emsam patch to long periods of heat. Im not sure if 10 minutes of tanning qualifies as a "long period." I mean, I am out in the sun for hours, but then again there is not concentrated rays on it. I am moving around.

I would experiment and see.

Yes, you can sweat and swim, it will not fall off if put on right.
