I know it lasts up to 8 hours, at least that is what my doc says. But what if I wanted to have a drink sometime and it has been over say 10 hours, is it safe? Or does it stay in your system some, even days later. (like prozac) I know there is probably an official name to what I am talking about, but heck I am a rookie at this stuff. ;-) And WOW, is this message board busy! :-) I almost have to do a search to find a post I made a couple of days ago.

Dr. Bob's benzo equivalency chart says 9-20 hours half-life for xanax, but I find it is shorter. I can go 8 hours between doses of IR xanax but it seems to leave my body completely at 8-9 hrs.
Also bear in mind it has no metabolites, so nothing to linger in your system. I do take a drink even a few hours after a dose, but cannot recommend it. I take a .25mg. dose several times a day so it is small and only one drink. If in doubt ask your pharmacist.

Happyflower I always drank beer and wine on xanax up to .5mg directly before my dose and never a problem. For me the xanax only lasts 4 hours before another dose. Love Phillipa.

for me xanax only lasts about 2 hours... for a couple months i was up to 2mg 6 times a day sometimes more... i noticed after the effects of the xanax wore off and i drank i was fine but everyone is diff... try just one drink then two next time and so on...

Seems like there is huge differences with everyone. I guess I would rather be on the safe side and use that one chart. Because drinks can be causing harm when on meds, even if you don't feel anything, and maybe nothing happens right away, or maybe it takes several times of doing it. I am just a big scardy cat! ;-)

Needless to say, but I wouldnt try that mixture but I dont tell people not to drink on meds, even though it probably isn't a good idea.
But to answer your question xanax has a short half-life. For me it stops any sedating/anti-anxiety effects after 7 or 8 hours maximum.

i took large quantities of xanax near the end of my 20 drinking career. i found it made for wicked hangovers which i had never eperienced before.
