INSOMNIA and BENZOS

Posted by halcyondaze on April 7, 2007, at 18:39:14

I'm having a paradoxical reaction to Halcion (Triazolam). It's supposed to be a short-acting benzodiazepine, which I take for insomnia, but it causes me to sleep for ten, twelve, fifteen hours at a time. I feel drowsy and literally cannot wake up the next morning. It used to work perfectly, but recently has begun causing this paradoxical reaction, which has also become life-interfering (since I have responsibilities during the day). I have been taking Ambien during the week, but I only sleep about two hours on Ambien, even when I combine it with Sonata.

My doctor and I are going to discuss other benzos for sleep. Can anyone recommend anything? My problems have to do with sleep initiation, sleep maintenance, and early morning waking, though I have the MOST difficulty with actually falling asleep. I was thinking perhaps Ativan. I want something that will help me sleep for a reasonable period of time (with a rapid onset - so something like Restoril is out) but will not cause me to stay asleep for 15 hours (so something like Dalmane is also out).

Any suggestions? I've looked through the psychiatric literature but there's (surprisingly) no head-to-head benzo comparisons for insomnia that I can find.

Strange we have the opposite effect to benzos want to trade for a while? Anyway I have the same can't sleep through the night and early wakening but no matter what I take can't sleep again. I am wondering if you ever tried valium as it worked well for me for years. Only recently have I had a problem. Good luck. Love Phillipa

I have on a very few occassions combined Ambien (get to sleep) with Lunesta (stay asleep). Though I've only tried it a few times, it seemed to work out well.

Sounds like you've kinda already tried this strategy with Ambien and Sonata.

I thought Restoril *was* supposed to have a relatively rapid onset?

Good Luck...Hope you find your deserved peace and rest...Saturn.

maybe Limbitrol (Librium+Elavil)??

Ativan seems like a good call. Short-term...Klonopin? For me, a night-time dose lulled me to sleep, then provided day-time anxiety relief b/c of the long half-life. Or what about plain old Valium? Have you tried Doral? ProSom?

Good luck.

I used to take Ativan and found it put me to sleep, kept me asleep and I felt relaxed, but not groggy the next day.

Ativan vs. ProSom

I should mention I also take a MAOI. And I've been on Seroquel (50 to 100 mg) FOREVERRRR. I was thinking either Ativan or ProSom. Anyone care to share the pros and cons of these two?

http://www.biopsychiatry.com/estazolam.htm

has a little study on ProSom..looks good. Ativan is also very clean, though, so to me it would seem that both are good meds. It seems like ProSom might be easier to find an ideal dose with.

I take 30mg of temazepam before sleep.

Great, no reaction, well it has made me get a little mad over things that i think about.

But seriously, that or Xanax.

Best wishes go to the doctor and tell him that this Trizolam sh*t is really causes heck and spasms is there anything else?
