Nardil work where everything else failed ?

Posted by jenny80 on April 3, 2007, at 10:25:15

I am 25 and have suffered from chronic depression, body dysmorphic disorder, anorexia and mild anxiety since i was 11.
I have been on most SSRIS, SNRIs, mirtazapine, lamotrigine, quetiapine, sulpiride and buspirone none of which have made any difference to my mood or symptoms.
I feel low and miserable everyday. i have no motivation to go out, meet with friends or even feed my self. I drag myself to work feeling suicidal and come home and go back to bed. Fortunately my family take care of me and make sure i bother to eat otherwise i would lie in bed and sleep the whole evening. I have little enjoyment these days and few friends who i am sure are becoming bored of me. If it was for my family I am sure i would have ended it by now either by selfneglect or some other way.
I recently met with a new psych who had started me on parnate 5 weeks ago. I took 10 mg three times a day for 3 weeks. Within this time i felt more depressed, wanting to be alone all the time, shivery cold, insomnia, profound fatigue along with periods od agitation. I also had loss of appetite which made me lose even more weight. I did not feel any improvement in mood but I know i should have persisted longer with the medication. However, i could not cope with the sideeffects which had not at all subsided within the 3 weeks of taking it.
I saw my doc today who told me to try nardil.
Have any of you had success with nardil after parnate did not work? What about sideeffects?
I am reaching the end of my tether with all this. My doc has told me that he thinks my problems are psychological because I am resistant to medication. However, i don't see this being the case. I am seeing a psychodynamic therapist twice a week and not making any progress. All she does is to try to find reasons as to why i am depressed by looking for supposed events in the past. I had a decent upbringing and can't find any events of reasons to blame for this. I tell her how miserable and apathetic I am and she agrees with me and I leave the sessions feeling i have made no progress.
i am sorry to go on like this i just can't understand why i feel this way and now my doc is making out like its all in my head.
i would really appreciate any of your comments about what i have said and about nardil and if any of you have had positive experiences from this afer trying every other medication.

I have heard of others in here who have had success on Nardil when Parnate did not work out.

Jenny I relate to your feelings as the docs make you feel it's all your fault and you must be doing something wrong as the meds"are supposed to work". Love Phillipa

First of all, I would try to give Parnate 8 weeks. What is your dosage? You might need to go up in your dosage? Many do and then it just comes all together one day. Post your info and others in here will share thier stories.

If not, heck yes try Nardil. They are different drugs and there a quite a few ppl in here that failed on Parnate, then had a miracle on Nardil, or vice versa.

I've currently been on 70 MG for about three weeks. I, too like you, have been depressed for multiple years (though not quite as long as you.) and have been on more drugs then I have fingers with no benefit. However, miraculously, Nardil has already made my depression about 85% better!
While it's only helped my anxieties moderately so far, I understand that it often helps less quickly with anxiety then it does wish depression (often taking 4-6 weeks) and often the dose has to be increased to 90MG.

But based on how much better I'm feeling depression-wise after feeling like crap for years, I'm feeling very optimistic it will help me with my anxiety!!!

thanks for your advice. think i will give nardil a go. i stupidly read the side-effects from nardil and noticed 'fatal liver failure' as one of them. Does anyone know how common this is? Did you know about this as a side effect before you started the med.

Hi Jenny,

Don't give up and don't believe them when they say that your problems must be psychological just because you are not responding to antidepressants.

I used to respond to antidepressants, now I don't, well not well anyway. Does that mean that my problem never used to be psychological but it is now????

I know somebody of about your age who did well on a combination of Cymbalta and Remeron and there are lots of other meds you haven't tried yet.

Don't despair and don't believe that you are simply just not trying hard enough, I feel like that myself when I'm really low. You feel as though there is something you should be doing or thinking and if only you would do that everything would be ok.

Hope Nardil works for you.

Denise

Im not a pdoc but if this indeed a major concern then express it to your pdoc and ask for a regular liver test. From what Ive read, this is very, very rare side effect. And I guess you would start turning yellow, which make it obvious that something is wrong. I dont think Nardil is any more dangerous than any other med (SSRIs included) out there. Good luck, Michael
