Feeling sick after one dose!

Posted by TrishP on March 20, 2007, at 14:38:58

Ok - now, after only one dose of depakote er 500mg, I feel nausous and sick - and hungry! It didn't even help me sleep last night.

If I am going to be hungry, I might as well take Abilify.

I'm beginning to think I need to stick with Klonopin as a mood stabilizer. At least it didn't make me hungry or sick and I could sleep.

I'm afraid to try Seroquel - it will probably just make me hungry and fat as well.

I hate these meds.

Don't give up, Trish. I had a lengthy course of Depakote, and I found that the SEs wore off in a matter of a few days. I think it was certainly more tolerable than Seroquel, which I recently stopped taking. The sedation with Seroquel was worse than anything else I have experienced, and it gave me a bad case of restless legs (though I am told that is a rare SE).

Depakote was not effective for my BP, but I know it has helped a lot of people. Stick with it for a while. Things may be discouraging at the start, but I think you'll see an improvement in a short period of time.

I'm scared of gaining weight.

Trish, Were you on regular depakote first...else why start at 500 mg ER? There is a 125 and 250 mg dose in the delayed release version. The ER also comes in a 250 mg, so I'd call the doc to see if the lower dose would be better with eliminating the SE's, rather than giving up yet...SG

After eating way too much last night, I took some Klonopin so I could get some sleep. I just couldn't take another dose of Depakote ER. I guess with my slow metabolism, it finally hit me later in the day.

I hide my weight well. But any way you look at it, I am 5'7 and 205 lbs. I have gained 50 lbs over the last 7 years from various SSRIs (mostly 30 lbs easy off of Celexa that I never lost).

My doc thinks I can take meds like Depakote or Seroquel, even though they make you gain weight. He feels that it is all about how you think. If you don't want to gain weight, don't let it enter into your conscience. Ugh! Hard to do when you have uncontrolable munchies.

I think the weight-gaining effect of Depakote may be overstated. I actually found that Depakote was less of a problem in that regard than several other meds. Of course, YMMV.

On the other hand, Seroquel is as bad as everyone says. I was ravenous on it.

Trish, did you see my post above on a lower dose? (nm)
