Experiences with Topamax?

Posted by Sandra62 on March 12, 2007, at 21:15:13

I just got off the phone with my PDOC who is working hard with me trying to find a good med combo for my Bipolar II (we think) that doesn't include the blunting effects I'm getting from Zyprexa (yes I am a calm individual but I'm numb to emotion and vigour...I used to be such a creative person, I miss writing songs, novels, painting, and just getting up in the morning ready to live life to it's fullest). She said she would like to try Tompamax. I am busy doing research on it, thought I'd start here for some personal stories on how it worked, didn't work for you.

Please include your diagnosis, dosage, length of time using it, etc. TIA!

Oh I think I'll google it too as it's a mood stabalizer and I'm crying a lot from med changes. Love Phillipa

I'm finding some good (and some bad of course) reviews on the new remedy find site:

https://remedyfind.revolutionhealth.com/remedyfind/treatments/Bipolar-II-Disorder/Topamax-Topiramate/

Sounds like it might really be worth a try. I love the weight loss aspect!

Here's the ultimate list of just that information: http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=20505&name=TOPAMAX

Note, the postings are ranked from best (5, at the top) to worst (1, at the bottom), but even people who give it a 5 often have the same side effects as those who give it the thumbs down.

I called the stuff Stupimax, but your mileage or brain may vary.

I'm BipolarII also w/rapid cycling and ADD. I've been on Topamax now for a month and love it. I'm happy to report that the side effects experienced have been slim to none, compared to the positive impact on my mood and rapid cycling.

I began at 25mg at first. This was a bit difficult for me because during that time, I was in a state of hypomanic. Then during week two I began to experience a bit of relief slowly but surely. My pdoc has now added Lyrica for anxiety, which has also been a life saver.(thanks to crazyhorse-right dosage help...)

Now I'm on 100mg of Topamax, 400mg Lyrica and 200mg Provigil I think I'll exhale for awhile and smile while the sun is out.

Good Luck to you.

COOL thanks! Glad you are well. I hope to find the same relief soon enough. Just gotta keep up with the trial and error I guess.

It will work out for you, just try and stay the course. I used to call myself the pdoc guinea pig. I'm okay with that title as long as it works in my favor. Best wishes

Personally I do not at all recommend this drug, but that's only because I had a very bizarre and bad experience while on it each time. Of course certain drugs hit everyone differently. And it usually doesn't hurt to try something new.

But when I was on Topamax, I could hardly form a sentence or even type a word. At least what I was meaning to say/type. It was BAD!

It was really weird! I would say things that made no sense but I was trying to say the correct thing. Same thing happened when I tried to communicate online.

Another thing I noticed is that my short-term memory was terrifyingly short. I mean seriously to the point where people were scared for me. And I myself because I couldn't hold a thought or recall one if my life depended on it.

I have tried Topamax twice now and feel I have given it a fair shake. Also I should mention I have started out each time taking only 1/2 of a 25mg Tablet and even at such a low dose, the dumbness began!

Just please be careful in whatever it is you take as there are sometimes some really nasty and disabling side effects from these types of meds. And unfortunately sometimes they are permanent.

On a more positive note, I have read that the "dumbness" sometimes goes away and sometimes only at higher doses. I wish I knew where I heard that, but I can't remember. Could have been here! LOL

Take good care and please listen to your body if you start having really bad side effects. No matter what you're taking. Believe me, you'll be so much better off!

I think too many people rely on what they're told or what hey read and not enough on how they feel. If I had kept taking some of the meds a couple of my Docs have prescribed me, I literally would not be here today.

God Bless!

Michelle
