I know there have been several medications relesed recently to help with nicotine withdrawal.
They target the nicotinic receptors in the brain. They stimulate certain ones to help rid cravings, but block the ones stimulated by smoking, so there is no pleasure felt by a cigarette.
I can't think of any names right now. Maybe someone could help me out.
Anyway, I was thinking, wouldn't this be a good idea for an antidepressant?

Well, theres Zyban/wellbutrin -- both marketed as an AD (wellbutrin) and a 'quit smoking med' (zyban) and its the same med.
It works on the dopamine receptors through.

I hear chantix is having a very high success rate. There was a GP on a forum talking about how only 2 out of 18 people he's treated with it have gone back to smoking and how he got a man who smoked for 50 years to quit with it.

When I was on ssris I would binge smoke, but never wanted a cig the next day. I felt the niccotine if I was drinking, but I was dumb to drink w/ pills.

My question is, does this drug have antidepressant effects for a depressed non-smoker? It seems logical since it stimulates the nicotinic receptors in the brain, which cause a dopamine release. I wonder if these drugs will be off-label or eventually approved for depression.

I am a smoker these days. I have one when I get up, instead of coffee. Which motivates me to get going. And two more throughout the day, when I either need a boost, or want to curb food cravings from meds. I guess it does have anti depressant qualities, but it is 10X more addictive than herion. Somehow I control 3/day though.
