Lunesta Ambien Sonata Rozerem for insomnia

Posted by steve59 on February 13, 2007, at 20:20:46

Has anyone noticed that the new drugs Lunesta, Ambien, Sonata, Rozerem touted
for sleep seem to be "light weights" compared to
Valium, Xanax, Klonopin and the AD remeron.

Yeah, they don't work as well as the older ones either. Only advantage apparently is not waking up with a hangover. I'll take chloral hydrate or doral any day!

Have You tried the AD Remeron. At low doses
it works great as a sleeping pill and is available
in generic form.

The advantage of some of the newer prescription medications like Ambien CR you mentioned are that they do not interfere with sleep architecture as much as older drugs. This means that many of the older drugs (and particularly benadryl) cause one to spend less time in certain stages of sleep (e.g. REM and stage 4) and more in others so that you are not getting full quality sleep as you would if you could sleep the full amount of time naturally without drugs.

Just because something heavily "puts you out" doesn't mean it's giving you good sleep. Some nasty drugs that aren't used anymore really "put you out" and interfere with sleep architecture to the point that eight hours of sleep on one of them is equivalent to about three without it.

It depends on how used to benzodiazepines one already is, for one factor. There is cross-tolerance to pseduobenzodiazepines and benzodiazepines.

Sonata is about the lightest of lightweights, if there is a word, of the pseudobenzodiazepines.

Its roughly decreasing Ambien/AmbienCR -> Lunesta -> Sonata. Rozerem is hard to say because it is a Melatonin receptor agonist many times more powerful than OTC Melatonin.

I'm not benzodiazepine "naive" so I take Rozerem and Ambien at this point.

But there is truth in that a drug doesn't have to slam you like Dalmane (freaky) in order to produce good sleep.

Some people who have tolerance or have greater insomnia like myself may have to take 20mg of Ambien or 4+mg of Lunesta for something to be effective. I recall a trial of Sonata ages ago that didn't do much at all. But before you go trying these trials, ask your doctor. Everyone is different; I wouldn't go beyond 20mg on Ambien either, nasty stuff happens, nausea, sleepwalking, who knows (not personal experience but a rough guess, I have gotten away with 25mg once.)

If I had been given it alone I could answer your question but chloral hydrate is powerful and kicks in very quickly. So I don't know. Love Phillia

Phillia
Are doctors willing to prescribe chloral hydrate these days or do you buy it from the internet pharmacies?

It's basically a mickey finn without, its chlorinated alcohol in a a sense and rather outdated. There are plenty safer alternatives today to try before chloral hydrate.

Ive taken alot of sleep drugs but benzos or lunesta are the only tolerable ones that dont also tend to put me into some 8-hour ultra light sleep state. xanax or klonopin are easiest on restorative sleep for me. abien sucked for me. chloral hydrate was allright in the short term

Phillipa I don't believe that combo would cause
any problems. I take 3mg of lunesta 20mg of valium
and 15 mg. of Remeron.

for me that would be too much drugs, two benzos and a non-benzo... that's just me though. lunesta made me feel kind of sh*tty the next day. I did sometimes mix lunesta with xanax though, I don't know about two... but less was lunesta was better for me. I bit it 3mg in half alot.
