Hypochondria/Panic

Posted by dbc on January 8, 2007, at 2:19:54

The few the not so proud, the hypochondriacs. I am a hypochondriac and by that i dont mean i get a little panicky when i have the flu i mean i completely lose my mind a couple times a week to an imaginary stroke/heart attack/whatever and if im in a poor mental state this can go on for days. I didnt sleep for 40 some hours this weekend untill i had to go to the psych unit of the local ER to be fed ativan untill i pass out.

This was my fault of course as i get ahead of schedule with my meds (not because i was getting strung out but because my panic was going off the charts, breakthrough panic i think its called).

People keep telling me over and over to see a counselor/therapist. I would love to and i've been waiting a month and a half to do so and its just not happening yet.

IMO, hypochondria is just a manifestation of generalized anxiety and it is nothing to be ashamed of.

Look, we can't control if we have a heart attack, stroke and I think the lack of control causes a lot of anxiety and panic is just a symptom.

I don't know what meds you are on, or who is prescribing them for you, but it is clear they need to be adjusted since the panic has clearly reached a fevered pitch.

I would also be careful that I did not get out ahead of the meds as many need to be titrated carefully to avoid the exact symptoms you describe.

Until you get your meds/therapy situation worked out I think you need some relief and fast. Don't wait to go to the ER until you haven't slept for 40 hours. I say go whenever you feel like it, even if it means just sitting in the waiting room.

Things can get better and it is in your control to make it such.

Good luck and hang in there.

Keep on posting if you feel like it, I would love to hear how you are progressing.

As far as meds im just taking essentially whatever benzos my doctor or an ER doctor will script me. Its mostly ativan these days which is fine with me. I've done the whole SSRI/SNRI thing (i think around 8) and they dont help me out really.

This morning i experianced some myoclonic jerks while falling asleep which scared the hell out of me. I imagine this is the result of benzo withdrawal/low blood glucose and quickly got an ativan script filled this morning. Of course my brain was screaming OH MY GOD SEIZURE, LESION IN THE BRAIN AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

A combination of the right medication and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) should help you. Until you can get into a counselor, i would use benzodiazapines (ativan, zanax, etc.) to control your anxiety. Hope you feel better soon.

Hey...

I'm a fellow hypochrondriac too. Its kinda mixed in with my poisoning myself/contamination fears. I'm usually convinced something terrible is about to happen to me. It makes eating stuff hard. oh well.

Anyway just to say you're not alone. I don't have any solutions I'm afraid, for me, this has been a relatively new development. I don't like the SNRIs/SSRIs either. I have a supply of benzos, but I actually don't take them. Oh well.

I would be be really keen to hear back from fellow hypochrondiacs, perhaps we could help each other out..... and find a solution!
