SAD and Light Therapy

Posted by Crazy Horse on December 28, 2006, at 21:02:36

My Pdoc thinks i may have SAD, and i agree with him. I don't think my insurance will cover a light box so i may have to pay for it out of my own pocket. I have heard Costco has light therapy lamps for around $100.00. My question is are Costco's lamps just as effective as any other form of artificial light therapy lamps? Any advice/experience will be very much appreciated.

Yep...I think they sell Golite boxes. One of the good ones. Don't know if you are an ebayer, but I picked one up for $100 there; about 1/2 price.

It's worth a try. I never got any benefit from it at all. Even bright summertime light doesn't help me.

I grow a wide variety of exotic plants in my living room. They get their light from a 400 watt full spectrum metal halide lamp and a 175 watt metal halide. These are the same bright white lights you see in WalMart parking lots. I can sit inches away from them for half an hour a day and it doesn't do squat. Neither do the flourescent therapy lamps which are far weaker in terms of spectrum and intensity.

I figure if the July sun can't do it, a flourescent doesn't stand a chance. If you think there is a pattern to your moods where you feel better in the summer and worse in the winter, then maybe light therapy could help. Will it bring remission or anything close? I doubt it. But to be sure, check remedyfind.com to see what other users have reported.

I bought a GoLITE last night at Costco and did my first 45 minute treatment this morning. I paid $159.00 for it, probably could have gotten it cheaper on-line, but i didn't want to have to wait for it. Man, i sure do hope it helps!

Phillipa,

I think you're supposed to use it before 11 or so in the morning.

I think if you use it too late it screws up your sleeping.

My daughter has a big one & I like it.

BUT - my SAD started mid-August & I got to the point where I didn't want to be alive (not that I was going to DO anything at all) - just did NOT want to have to have this pain.

SO - I was reading this & that & checking everything out & I tried a homeopathic liquid remedy that I found at a Natural foods store.

It's by Dr. Reckeweg (name of company that makes it) They make meds for all kinds of problems.

The one I bought is R184. It has 3 ingredients & it started working the VERY FIRST DAY I tried it!

THANK GOD/GODDESSES/& everything/everyone else in the universe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this isn't the Alternative Board, but since this subject has come up here I thought it was important for me to share my sanity-saving information.

luv, Kath

Monte - my worst time was also when I woke up. I would fell so AWFUL that I'd be sort of in physical pain - or almost - would sort of thrash around in bed & whimper 'cuz I felt so gawd-awful.

And the R184 is miraculous. I got down to taking it 2 times/day, then sorta forgot to even take it 'cuz I felt normal. Then I got feeling sh*tty again & began again & it didn't work quite as quickly the second time, BUT then it kicked in & for me it is precious!

Good luck Kath

Kath that's how I feel when I wake up late in the morning as up til 2am. Don't they say depression is better late in the day or night? Love Phillipa

I don't know if it is or not Phillipa.

Come to think of it, at those times when I was feeling like that, if I woke up at 7 or so, I often didn't feel dreadful, but was still tired, so went back to sleep & then felt dreadful.

Thanks God I'm not having that now. It is so awful.
Kath
