Modafinil(Provigil)withDepakote(divalproex sodium)

Posted by Dragoon on December 29, 2006, at 12:18:56

Hi, i was just diagnosed with frontal lope errr "minor epelepsy" because of a accident i had a few years back that left a lesion on my head. Basically partial seizures are going. The doc gave me Depakote which im not particularly happy with do to its large side effect profile but it will do for now i guess.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with a depakote and modafinil combo. I have tried modafinil in the past by itself and many studies show it safe with AED's, but im looking for more anectdotal evedince.

Thanks

Hi,
I've tried modafinil with and without depakote... modafinil is very effective for energy and concentration.. it was a little uncomfortable for me, too activating, but im generally very sensitive to drugs...

My pdoc loves adding it for ssedation and as a cognitive-enhancer..

good luck!

Based on my own experience using depakote or adrafinil (provigil's parent) I sense there could be good benefit by combining them. Provigil is popular to combine with benzos, antidepressants of all kinds, mood stabilizers, and even maois. It is usually given to combat sluggishness and it is very good for that. It often has a mood boost too, enough so that at remedyfind.com it is actually the top ranked antidepressant of them all.

interesting combo

I'd think there'd be some competitive action going on at the glutamate and GABA receptor sites, as Depakote (from what I've read on it, a bit rusty on Depakote, more up on other ACs such as Topomax, etc. Anyways, if Depakote acts anything like Topomax in inhibiting the release of glutamate and activating the release of GABA, then I'd think it may be contraindicative to Provigil, as Provigil does the opposite in stimulating glutamate release and inhibiting GABA release). The big question I'd have is where these 2 drugs are active within the CNS, they may act in different regions of the brain and thus may complement each other. Best thing I've come by: trying things out. Good luck.

I don't believe your mechanism of action for provigil is correct... i understand that provigil is a non-stimulant, which works by activating NE neurons in a stimulatory region of the brain..
I don't believe they will counteract each other at all, heres a case report showing that this combo has been used:
